Ezra Levant, the media personality and conservative political activist has lost a case in court on the grounds of calling someone an anti-Semitic seven years ago. The case was filed by Khurram Awan who has been the resident of the Canadian Islamic congress.
Ezra Levant was accused of defamation as he wrote some comments on his blog regarding Khurram Awan as an anti-Semite. With the litigation spanning over seven years, Levant had to pay a lot in Lawyer fees and he lost the case to Khurram Awan.
Awan was the president of the anti-Semitic group called the Canadian Islamic Congress, and Ezra called him one because Khurram Awan himself had once testified saying that certain statements by the Canadian Islamic Congress were anti-Semitic.
Ezra appealed the trial ruling, which had cost him about $30,000. Today, the Ontario court of Appeal gave its ruling and the financial cost that Ezra paid was high.
Ezra might have lost the case and suffered a heavy loss, but what he was more concerned about how is Canada to deal with bigots and racists in the future. The point being made by Ezra is that if anyone makes a comment about someone’s wrong beliefs about a certain race or religion that means that they should be allowed to say something on the media without being scrutinized and charged with defamation cases.
This is not just in the case of anti-Semitism. If someone stands up tomorrow and says death to all Muslims, he should be stopped and punished. The judge ruled against Ezra because according to them, if there are hard feelings and animosity that motivate these comments, it takes away the right of anyone to make a fair comment if they are directed at others associated with that person.
Ezra lost the case, but he won in proving a point that people who are wrong need to be called out on that wrong. Freedom of Speech suggests calling out and exposing the person that is saying or doing wrong. Without this right, anybody would be free to commit crimes, steal, cheat and lie without facing any consequences, PM Trudeau is moving forward to make it illegal for the right to speak.
Canada needs to fight back and take this right.
