Aquaman has been the king of the sea for 80 years

Some call him “The King of the Seven Seas” and others, “The Marino Wonder” or “King of Atlantis”, although he is none other than Aquaman.

Like “Green Arrow”, in this 2021 the DC Comics character is celebrating. It celebrates 80 years of having dabbled in comics, becoming one of the pillars of the company and of its most outstanding team, The Justice League.

Created by artist Paul Norris and writer Mort Weisinger, the character made his debut in More Fun Comics number 73, published in November 1941. In its early days it was a backup, but little by little it gained notoriety.

DC will publish in October a compilation of their best stories that every fan should have. It will be called Aquaman: 80 Years of the King of the Seven Seas.

For Manuel Salas, an expert in comics, Aquaman has been relevant on several occasions in the history of DC. It took off in 1950, according to what he told El Siglo de Torreón.

“In that decade and later in 1960, ‘The King of the Seven Seas’ was incorporated as a founding member of The Justice League of America, this within a period known as the Silver Age of comics. It was in the nineties when the writers gave the character a more serious touch and he really became the King of Atlantis, “he said.

Salas commented to this newspaper that in the cultural editor Glen Weldon said a few years ago that Aquaman had been led the wrong way, after showing him as an ineffective superhero, when he really was not, since he has surprising capabilities.

Aquatic-amphibian adaptation, telepathy, psionic domination of marine life, healing factor, superhuman strength, agility, dexterity, speed, endurance and durability are some of his abilities, in addition to carrying the Trident of Poseidon.

According to DC writers, his name is Arthur Curry and his parents are Thomas Curry and Queen Atlanna. He has a romantic relationship with Mera.

Aquaman’s first origin story was told by the character himself in a flashback to his debut.

“The story must begin with my father, a famous underwater explorer; if I said his name, you would recognize him. My mother died when I was a baby, and he went back to work to solve the secrets of the ocean. His great discovery was a ancient city, deep where no other diver had ever penetrated.

“My father believed it to be the lost kingdom of Atlantis. He built an airtight house in one of the palaces and lived there, studying the archives and devices of the wonderful wisdom of the race.

“From books and archives, he learned ways to teach me to live under the sea, harnessing the oxygen in the water and using all the power of the sea to make me wonderfully strong and fast. By training and discovering hundreds of scientific secrets, I became what you see, a human being that lives and thrives under water, “was how it was described.

The superhero jumped from comics to animated series. In 1967 he made his first appearance in The Superman & Aquaman Hour of Adventure; later it appeared in the cartoon of the Super Friends, of 1973.

In the eighties he had his own program and later he was seen in Justice League, Young Justice or Batman: The Brave and the Bold; He has also starred in DC animated films.

In live action, Aquaman debuted on the Smallville series. It was embodied by Alan Ritchson. Later, Alan gave the baton to Jason Momoa, but in the cinema, being part of the films Batman vs. Superman, The Justice League and in his own film, Aquaman, from 2018, which will present its sequel in 2022.

The version of Momoa moved away from the traditional image of the superhero, showing him with long dark hair and with various tattoos covering his body.
