Gibson’s new SG for Kirk Douglas

by Redacción

The signature guitar released by Gibson for musician “Captain” Kirk Douglas is now available in two finishes: Inverness Green and Ebony.

“Captain” Kirk Douglas is the guitarist for The Roots, the house band that appears on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon on the NBC channel. His guitar collection includes several Gibson models, most notably his three-pickup Gibson SG Custom, which is now commemorated with Gibson USA’s new Kirk Douglas signature SG.

The new model features non-locking keystone tuners, mahogany neck and body, rosewood fingerboard with 22 medium jumbo frets and large-block acrylic inlays, a Graph Tech nut, ABR-1 Tune-O-Matic bridge and “Captain” tailpiece. Kirk Douglas signature Lyre Tail Vibrola, black Top Hat knobs with metal inserts, and three BurstBucker humbucker pickups.

At a basic level, the pickups and controls on this SG operate similar to a two-pickup SG, but with significant additional capabilities. The three-way toggle switch selects bridge pickup, neck pickup, or both. Each of these pickups has its own volume control, and each is equipped with a push / pull potentiometer that switches the pickup from humbucker to single coil when the switch is pulled.

There is a single master tone knob, located in the usual main tone control position, and where you would normally expect to find the second tone control, an additional volume control is included (again, with a push / pull switch to split the coil) installed. This controls the middle pickup and can be used to mix its signal with the other (one or two) pickups, regardless of how the three-way pickup selector switch is positioned. This means that it is possible to operate the neck and / or bridge pickups alone or together, the neck and the middle, the bridge and the middle, or all three pickups simultaneously, and in whatever amount of relative volume is desired. Additionally, once the exact desired balance has been dialed in, the overall output level of the entire guitar can be adjusted with the master volume control mounted on the pickguard.
