Although the book and movie are set in Missoula, Montana, the movie was shot in various locations other than Missoula, including the small towns of Bozeman and Livingston, Montana. But of course, the river scenes in the movie are one of the biggest draws. The river runs through it. Filming locations for these scenes included the Yellowstone River, the Boulder River, and the Gallatin River. There were also some parts of the movie that were shot in Jackson, Wyoming. While the beloved classic is supposed to take place in the western United States, it was actually filmed in the northwestern provinces of Canada, including British Columbia and Alberta. From Calgary to Vancouver, the film encompasses many awe-inspiring locations, such as the Ghost River in Alberta and Gastown, Vancouver. There is even a part of the movie that was shot in Saint Ann, Jamaica. So if this is your favorite, add Western Canada to your overseas travel list.

Its mountainous landscape and its forests are among the most biodiverse you can find and are home to the oldest mountains in the world. So if you haven’t already, add Asheville to your bucket list for hiking, foraging, and maybe even directing someone to stay inside you.
