Earlier this year, it was announced that J.D. Dillard (Sleight) would join the ranks of directors like JJ Abrams, Rian Johnson, Patty Jenkins, Kevin Feige, and Taika Waititi in helming a Star Wars project for The Walt Disney Company.

Few details have been released about the project, which has also tapped Marvel Cinematic Universe writer Matt Owens, though it was originally rumored to be a film set on the Sith planet of Exegol.
Now, however, it seems that Dillard’s installment in the Star Wars story might be taking a different direction. Recently, reports emerged that John Boyega — who played ex-stormtrooper Finn in the sequel trilogy — was in talks with Disney and Lucasfilm about a Finn prequel series.

A new report indicates that Dillard’s project might actually be this Finn show, though it is important to note that nothing has been confirmed.
The actor’s supposed return to the Star Wars universe is surprising given Boyega’s scathing comments about the Star Wars franchise –including the fact that filming Episode VII – The Force Awakens (2015), Episode VIII – The Last Jedi (2017), and Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker (2019) was like “luxury jail” — a return does somewhat track with the British actor’s previous comments about feeling like Finn’s story arc was sidelined in the divisive sequels.

It is worth noting that the James Bond hopeful did, at one point, have a closed-door “honest” conversation with Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy regarding his grievances, so it is possible that certain issues were resolved without the public’s knowledge.
Black Lives Matter (BLM) supporter Boyega has also previously quipped that he might consider a Star Wars comeback if Finn were to receive Jedi training and get his own lightsaber — a plot that would reportedly play out in the rumored series.

Daisy Ridley (Rey) and Oscar Isaac (Poe Dameron) — who rounded out the core trio in the Star Wars sequel movies — have both indicated they have no plans for an immediate return to a galaxy far, far away. It is, therefore, unlikely that they would appear in the Finn series if it does come to fruition.

As for Boyega, he currently has several projects, including They Cloned Tyrone, 892, The Test, Borderland, and Attack the Block 2, in production after abruptly exiting Netflix series Rebel Ridge.
