Disney World’s first reverse-launch roller coaster, Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind, is set to debut in 2022 at Epcot.
The attraction – don’t dare call it a ride – will consist of two parts, the latter being one of the world’s longest enclosed roller coasters. The building that houses the coaster is “so large it can fit four Spaceship Earths,” the iconic “golf ball” at the entrance to Epcot, according to Ashley Levine, senior product controls at Walt Disney Imagineering.
Details such as the exact height, speed and time of the attraction haven’t been released, but we do know the coaster does not go upside down. It is being billed as a family-friendly adventure.

“We believe it will be a bit more thrilling than Seven Dwarfs Mine Train (at Magic Kingdom), but not quite as adrenaline-inducing as Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster (Staring Aerosmith at Hollywood Studios),” said Levine. “It will be a smooth and enjoyable experience.”
Another first for this coaster is new technology that allows the ride vehicle to rotate 360 degrees while zooming along the track. This will allow riders to be pointed at the most action and will ensure they get the most out of the attraction.
The first part of the experience begins in the Galaxarium, a planetarium-like exhibition where guests will learn about the planet Xander, its history, culture and the heritage of its people.
“Something’s going to go wrong and we’re going to be whisked away with the Guardians on an incredible adventure through time and space,” Levine said.
The movie Guardians of the Galaxy is based on the Marvel Comics superhero team of the same name. The film, directed by James Gunn, stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel and Bradley Cooper. It was released in 2014 with a sequel that came out in 2017. The third installment is expected to be released in 2023.
