The Spartanburg Philharmonic Celebrates The Magic Of John Williams With Families

Baby Yoda.
Harry Potter.
Kylo Ren.
Superman.
John Williams.

What do these people all have in common? Children are fans of them!
They may not know the name of the composer who has had a hand in the score of nearly every iconic film made in the last 70 years, but I assure you they will recognize his work.

The scores of popular films like Star Wars, Harry Potter, Jurrasic Park, Home Alone, and dozens of others have become a part of our culture. So much so that I bet your child can identify the theme from Jaws without ever having seen the 80s thriller. Highly recognizable orchestral music like this is a great way to introduce your family to the Spartanburg Philharmonic.

See how many of the songs on The Spartanburg Philharmonic’s Magical Music Preview you and your family members can recognize (no cheating)! This playlist on Spotify will give you a sneak peek at the music you will hear during the performance.

The music of John Williams has become so well known by audiences over the years, and the music remains timeless especially those famous themes from Jurassic Park and Star Wars.

I encourage everyone to dress up in costume for the concert and enjoy an evening of some of John Williams’ most famous film scores.

The Magical Power of A Spartanburg Philharmonic Performance

Studies have shown that attending a live performance of this kind at a young age can help a child become a better communicator, help with motor skills, help brain function, and (wait for it) provide people of all ages with a stronger immune system.

That last part got your attention, right?

It’s true, and it’s been studied numerous times. Listening to music transports us to a relaxing place with its calming effect. The result is a reduction in stress-related hormones and an increase in the immunity-boosting cells in our system. It’s like taking vitamins, only more enjoyable!

Have A Magical Night With The Spartanburg Philharmonic

If you have never been to a performance at the Spartanburg Philharmonic, it’s probably nothing like you expect. The Spartanburg Philharmonic brings in fresh new faces to conduct, chosen for their incredible talent and personality.

The days of dry and serious orchestral performances are gone, and even when the Spartanburg Philharmonic is playing a performance that isn’t themed, it’s still a fun event to attend. The special guest conductor for The Spartanburg Philharmonic’s “Magical” is native New Yorker and Indian American conductor Roger Kalia. His current job titles include being the Director of five different orchestras across the country, and he is passionate about advocating for music education.

Guest Conductor Kalia

I am very excited to be conducting a program featuring works all by John Williams with the Philharmonic this October.  John Williams is perhaps America’s greatest living composer, and it is hard to believe that he will be turning 90 years old in 2022!  His music is universal and loved by audiences of all ages.  I am thrilled to be conducting the music of Star WarsHarry Potter, and Jurassic Park, among his other famous film scores.

Not only are these scores memorable and beautiful, but they are also a joy and honor to conduct.  I might even trade in my baton for a light saber!

Attending A Magical Performance With The Spartanburg Philharmonic

Guests attending this “Magical” event are encouraged to show love for their favorite fandom by dressing up as characters from their favorite John Williams’ scored movie. Your whole family can dress in a theme or show your individual love for a movie. This is your chance to get creative and have fun at the Philharmonic! Don’t forget it’s Halloween weekend, so your costume for the performance can do double duty.
*Keep in mind you’ll need to be comfortable in the theatre seat during the performance, so large cumbersome costumes should be avoided.

The Spartanburg Philharmonic offers youth pricing for all Zimmerli Series concerts, 50% off tickets for youth aged 22. This is a great way to build off of your child’s excitement about orchestral music.
