Free Mobile's 5G flashed at over 1 Gbit / s

Free’s 5G is doing its own thing.

With its foot on the accelerator, Free Mobile continues to move faster and faster. With the aggregation of several 4G frequencies in addition to those used for the new generation of mobile telephony, it is possible to cross the gigabit per second at Xavier Niel’s operator, even for a brief moment.

If the average speed reached by VacheGTI, although honorable, does not reach the record of 747.38 Mbit / s, during the 20 second test, the operator’s 5G was indeed flashed at 1106 Mbit / s. As a reminder, the promises of 5G lie, much more than in the speed achieved, in ultra-low latency, however, the network will only reach its optimal performance by 2023 for the general public, once it will operate with a 5G core network.

This speed was reached on a 5G 3.5 GHz site, offering 4G in mimo 4 × 4. This technology makes it possible to boost flow rates, thanks to several transmitters and several receivers. Not all Free Mobile sites are yet compatible, it is notably impossible to use it on the 700 MHz band. At Free Mobile, the technology is available on the 1800 MHz and 2600 MHz bands.

To achieve such high speeds, the smartphone must also support this technology. Free Mobile also indicates this in the technical sheets of smartphones sold through its online store. Among them, we find the latest flagships from Apple and Samsung (Galaxy Note 20, iPhone 12, etc.), but also high-end models Xiaomi and Oppo (Oppo Reno4 5G and Xiaomi Mi 10T). On the other hand, this is not the case for less expensive models such as the Xiaomi Redmi Note 9, the Samsung Galaxy A41 or the Oppo A72.
