For 10 years, between 2001 and 2011, Eric Schmidt was the CEO of Google. It is in particular under his care that the company went from being a startup to a giant that we know today. If the man had until then kept a link with the company by officiating in particular as a technical advisor, it would seem that the cord linking it to Google has been definitively cut last February, following his resignation.
Eric Schmidt, at the heart of Google’s success
When Eric Schmidt arrived at Google in 2001, the company is then a young rising startup. The man, who has just been appointed CEO, must then ensure the “adult supervision“the young founders of the company, Larry Page and Sergey Brin, while growing the firm.
A new angle of attack against Google and digital advertising in the United States
It will notably be at the heart of major strategic decisions that have enabled Google to become the digital giant that we know today. Among them, the acquisition of Android as well as that of YouTube, or the creation of the Google advertising platform. It was also under his responsibility that the company went public in 2004, and he also participated in the creation of Alphabet, the parent company of Google, of which Sundar Pichai is today the CEO.
A smooth ride
After 10 years as CEO of Google, Eric Schmidt became its executive chairman in 2011, when Larry Page took over the reins of his company. A few years later, in 2015 precisely, he will occupy the same position, but this time for Alphabet. A position he will keep until January 2018, before taking on the role of “technical advisor on science and technology” for the group. A role for which the man was only paid a dollar a year.
Finally, It was in February 2020 that the link between Eric Schmidt and Google was finally and definitively cut, according to Cnet. A departure that will not have a major impact on the operation of the firm, but which is nevertheless highly symbolic. Indeed, he was the last historical member of Google still at the head of the company since Larry Page and Sergey Brin themselves left Google in 2019.
From now on, Eric Schmidt will certainly continue to focus on his role as a member of the Defense Innovation Board., a working group that advises the Pentagon on technological innovation. He is also expected to chair a commission whose mission will be to modernize the infrastructure and technological practices of New York State during and after the Covid-19 pandemic.
