Facebook makes wristband for AR environments – News

Facebook is developing a wristband that allows you to interact in a virtual environment by moving your fingers. The wristband must be combined with AR glasses.

The system uses electromyography (EMG) to convert signals in the nerves of the wrists into digital commands. EMG is a technique that measures the electrical activity of muscles. According to Facebook, the signals can be picked up so precisely that EMG detects a finger movement of just a millimeter.

Although Facebook has not yet announced when the wristband will be available, the company has shown how it works in a video. The video shows the wristband: a fabric strap with a device on it, slightly larger than a large watch. By squeezing the fingers, AR glasses can be zoomed in or out, tapped an object and much more.

Right now, Facebook plans to use EMG for just one or two finger gestures. The company calls this ‘intelligent clicks’. But in the future, the company expects to be able to fully control virtual objects and surfaces with the signals.
