Apple unveils magnetic iPhone 12 with 5G – News

Tech giant Apple presented its long-awaited new smartphones on Tuesday evening. The iPhone 12 comes in four versions, all equipped with 5G for ultra-fast mobile internet. That technology, which is not really getting off the ground for the time being, may be accelerated by the new iPhones.

Originally, the new iPhones were supposed to be unveiled in September – an annual tradition at Apple. However, the corona crisis put a stop to that. Due to the same pandemic, certain models will also be delivered later than planned. If you have set your sights on an iPhone 12 mini or iPhone 12 Pro Max, you will have to be patient until November 13. The ‘regular’ iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro will be available from October 23.

From mini to Max

In total, this concerns four new smartphones, which differ mainly due to their screen size and camera functions. The mini is the most compact of the bunch, although you can hardly call 5.4 inches ‘small’. In comparison: the very first iPhone from 2007 had to make do with a 3.5-inch display, and the iPhone SE 2 introduced in April of this year is also a lot more modest at 4.7-inch. All new iPhones, from the mini to the Pro Max, now have an OLED screen, of the Super Retina XDR type.

The screens of the new models are now also equipped with Ceramic Shield, a process that makes the glass extra strong and scratch-resistant. According to Apple, the chance of glass breakage in the event of a fall is four times smaller.

5G met Smart Data Mode

A step higher on the ladder we find the iPhone 12, which with its 6.1-inch screen is a bit larger than the mini. The other specifications are almost identical: the new A14 Bionic processor, a dual camera system consisting of a wide-angle and ultra-wide-angle camera of 12 megapixels (with 2x optical zoom), and of course 5G.

This technology for lightning-fast mobile internet is only being rolled out in many countries, but now that Apple is putting its weight behind it, the process may go a bit faster. Apple’s smartphone simply remains a reference, with the iPhone 11 being the world’s best-selling phone. Operator Verizon immediately followed suit during the presentation by rolling out 5G across the United States this week, with a target audience of 200 million users. Also worth mentioning is the Smart Data Mode of the phone. For example, the iPhone automatically switches from 4G/LTE to 5G when necessary, and back again when 4G/LTE is sufficient. In this way, the battery of the device would be less heavily loaded.

Another eye-catcher on all new iPhones is MagSafe. The bottom line is that the backs of the phones are magnetic, which means that the new wireless charger immediately ‘clicks’ in the right place. With many other wireless chargers, it often takes a while to find that ‘hotspot’. Apple also uses MagSafe for a number of other new accessories, such as magnetic cases and even a magnetic holder for credit cards.

The iPhone 12 and 12 mini are available in black, white, ProductRed, green and blue. Prices start at 909 and 809 euros respectively, for the version with 64 GB of memory.

Pro versions

For those who want a little more, Apple also introduced the iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max on Tuesday, in the sizes 6.1 and 6.7-inch. The screens are therefore somewhat larger than those of their predecessors (5.8- and 6.5-inch), but due to the thinner edges, the outer dimensions remain almost identical. The same applies to the price: from 1,159 and 1,259 euros for the version with 128 GB storage capacity.

The Pro models have a more premium finish, for example with a stainless steel rim and a very high rating for dust and water resistance (up to six meters deep, for half an hour). The Ceramic Shield coating is also not missing.

Nevertheless, the Pro versions are mainly distinguished by their appearance. The devices have a 12-megapixel pro camera system, consisting of a wide-angle, ultra-wide-angle and telephoto camera. The Pro has a range of 4x optical zoom, the lens of the Pro Max goes up to 5x optical. The Pro series can also record video in Dolby Vision HDR quality (in 4K/60fps), which Apple says is a first for a smartphone.

LiDAR-scanner

We also remember the LiDAR scanner (in full: Light Detection And Ranging). This technology, which is also on the rise in fully or partially self-driving cars, detects the distance to an object using laser pulses. The LiDAR sensor aids in augmented reality imaging, but can also be used for accurate measurements of surrounding objects. In less favorable lighting conditions, the sensor helps the autofocus to focus faster.

The iPhone 12 Pro (Max) is available in graphite, silver, gold and platinum blue. All new iPhones will now be delivered without earphones or power adapter. Apple, which has already shipped more than two billion adapters on its own, wants to relieve the environment in this way. The package does contain a USB-C to Lightning charging cable – it works in principle with any other adapter, and also allows you to charge the iPhone with a computer or in the car.
