New Nikon software turns camera into webcam – News

Need a better webcam for all those Zoom and Teams meetings? There is now a free solution for owners of certain Nikon cameras. The Japanese manufacturer has just released a piece of software that turns a classic camera into a webcam.

The software in question is called Webcam Utility and is available for free for Windows 10 PCs and Mac computers (from macOS 10.13). Nikon already released a beta version of the tool six months ago, which works together with a large number of system cameras and digital SLR devices from the manufacturer (see the box below this article).

External microphone

After the software is installed, all you need to do is connect the camera to the computer via a USB cable. Webcam Utility not only works with Zoom and Microsoft Teams, but also with Google Meet, Facebook Messenger and Skype. The resolution of the images is a maximum of 1,024 x 768 pixels, regardless of which camera is used.

A downside is that the microphone in the camera cannot be used during video calls. Therefore, the microphone of the computer or an external copy must be called upon for this.

Compatible cameras

Webcam Utility works with the following Nikon devices: Z7II, Z7, Z6II, Z6, Z5, Z50, D6, D5, D850, D810, D780, D750, D500, D7500, D7200, D5600, D5500, D5300 and D3500. Future Nikon mirrorless cameras and digital SLRs will also be supported by the software.
