Women’s Amateur: Zhang and Lindblad lead. Paltrinieri and Don pass the cut

In Augusta first laps conditioned by the strong wind. Tomorrow the final round on the field that next week will host the Masters

After two laps of the Women’s Amateur, the most important appointment ever for women’s amateur golf, the qualifying phase has concluded on the perfidious track of the Champions Retreat in Augusta (Georgia).

A not very generous layout, which does not forgive for its length and for its wavy, very fast and well defended greens. Thanks to the wind, which yesterday blew from the North to 30 kilometers. This is demonstrated by the cut that left the top 30 in the race, who fell seven strokes above par, after a five-man playoff for the last available place. Only two of them presented a score below par in the sum of the two rounds, but of only one measure (143 strokes).

With 71-72, Rose Zhang, from the United States, took the lead at the top of the board, reaffirming her position as number one in the world rankings. But she was joined shortly after by the Swedish Ingrid Lindblad who, after losing two shots on the 9, changed gear and put in five birdies in the second (73-70). Waving the Italian flag high with Emilie Paltrinieri and Caterina Don, qualified for the second part of this incredible experience that will see them protagonists of the final round, Saturday 3 April, on the Augusta National track. Virtually perfect with the Masters coming next week.

Emile Paltrinieri, who plays and studies in Los Angeles at the University of California, finished in 149 hits, plus 5 on par. “In the windiest first nine holes I had difficulty choosing the irons for the green; I missed a few and recovering is not easy given the slopes, so by seven I had already lost five shots. But I am very satisfied with how I played later, bringing home the result ”. Caterina Don, twenty-year-old from Turin who attends university in Georgia, finished her eighteen holes stunned by a double bogey at the very last, for a partial of 77 and then waiting for the verdict. “The second shot was supposed to be a lay-up and instead I went into the water. With the wind swirling in the trees you have to trust the decision you make, but sometimes it’s not the right one. Here, however, I made a really bad shot. A tough course overall with holes like 12 (par 4 of 340 meters) where, with the wind in your face, drivers and wood 5 were not enough to get to the green. It is also difficult to put in the wind on such hard greens. “At the Augusta National Caterina is back for the second time, twelfth two years ago in the final classification, a result that makes her very proud.

Out of a shot Anna Zanusso (152, 75-77): “Difficult auctions on the first day, pitch heavy with rain and even longer on the second. But I am quite satisfied with my game, especially around the green. There remains the regret of being out for just one shot, which is easy to find in the two laps, but it is an experience that I will always carry with me ”. Out of two Alessia Nobilio and Benedetta Moresco. For Alessia, who scored her first birdie at 4, a cold shower immediately after, when she scored a 7 on the score at hole 6, a par 3 of 150 meters. From then on he only lost three shots, but the accident weighed heavily on the fate of his race. This is his overall comment: “A first round with very few greens taken but many recoveries and only 25 putts, I kept my head and character; in the second a good start but the quadruple bogey led me astray, I lost faith and the mistakes arrived. It is not the result I was hoping for but there are many ideas to take home, even after playing with number one Rose Zhang ”. Same score of the day (78) for Benedetta, who paid mainly in the central holes. For all the players today the opportunity to caress the fairways of Augusta National in a triumph of flowers and the public, some for a field test in view of the decisive round, some for a memorable experience.

Ranking after two laps 1. Zhang 71-72, Lindblad 73-70 (143); 3. Auston 72-72, Mehaffey 75-69 (144); 5. Kim 74-71, Fredgaard 70-75; Kajitani 73-72 (145); 8. Grant 70-76; Heck 73-73 (146); 10.
