Hansel and Gretel, the German fairy tale by Wilhelm Grimm and Jacob Grimm, has served as the inspiration for numerous films and television series. In 2013, Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton starred in the film Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters – 15%, which was a resounding failure, as critics considered it alternately bloody and silly. However, everything seems to indicate that the new film directed by Oz Perkins, Gretel & HanselIt will be a good tribute to the popular story, and it promises to be chilling, as its first trailer shows.

The new film will star the young Sophia Lillis. The actress is known for playing the teenage Beverly Marsh in It (It) – 85% already Camille Preaker on the HBO series Sharp Objects – 96%. On Gretel & Hansel, Lillis will play Gretel, a 16-year-old girl who carries her brother Hansel (Sam Leakey) to the forest with the intention of getting work and food to help their parents. As is well known, along the way they will meet an evil witch (Alice Krige) who is plotting to kidnap them.
Marketing for the film has been straightforward and began with the publication of a first image of Lillis as Gretel, carrying a lantern in what appears to be the house of the terrible witch. In addition, this morning, the film released its first trailer that will be released in theaters at the end of the week in the functions of It: Chapter Two – 80%, a film in which Lillis also appears in the flashbacks of Beverly, her character, in an adult version, played by Jessica Chastain.
Unlike other adaptations of fairy tales to the big screen, in which different classic stories like Snow White and the Huntsman are mixed – 48%, starring Kristen Stewart and Chris Hemsworth, Gretel & Hansel promises to respect the original story and the components that made it so popular and scary.
In addition, in the first preview of this new production you can see the style of Oz Perkins, known for In the Cold of the Night – 44%, as it has a gloomy tone with atmospheric supernatural terror, which shows that it will be a very pleasant film. The script, written by Rob Hayes, does not rescue the story of the Brothers Grimm as it is, but adapts it to this era, maintaining the values of the story. For example, in this version, the witch played by Krige does not live in a candy house, but uses tasty delicacies to tempt hungry children, such as Hansel and Gretel, into her home.
Throughout the trailer you can see a montage of haunting images hinting at the witch’s habit of eating children, among other horrors that will appear in the film. The wonderfully bleak photography is a product of Galo Olivares, a film collaborator from Rome – 99%, so, surely, only the visual quality of the film will be worth a trip to the cinema.
We recommend: It: Chapter Two already has a critical rating
An interesting fact about this new film is that in the title the order of the names is alternated, putting first the girl’s name and then that of little Hansel. This is, according to an interview that Perkins had with the medium IndieWire, because they wanted Gretel’s character to be older and to have more weight than her brother’s, so that she could take it everywhere, so the name of the tape had to go according to this.
We try to find a way to make it more like a coming-of-age story. I wanted Gretel to be a little older than Hansel, so that she didn’t feel like two twelve-year-olds, but more like a sixteen-year-old and an eight-year-old. There was more of a feeling that Gretel had to carry Hansel everywhere and how that can impede our own evolution, how our attachments and the things we love can sometimes interfere with our growth.
The film filmed in Ireland will be one of the first horror films to be released next year and with this first preview he promises that it will be totally disturbing and dark. Here is the first trailer for you to take a look at before it is screened in theaters.
