Game News 10 best Switch games to play on the go

We won’t teach you anything: with its large catalog of games, its compact design and its more than adequate autonomy, the Nintendo Switch presents itself as the portable console par excellence. It is therefore perfectly suited to transport journeys, whether short, long or endless. In this article, we reveal our list of titles to have a good time in these different cases.

5-10 min ride

Puyo Puyo Tetris 2

For a short trip, you need a game that is very easy to learn and that provides immediate pleasure, so as not to lose a second: Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 is the perfect candidate in this area. As indicated by his name, it’s the wacky encounter between the Tetris series and Puyo Puyo, which is more or less its Japanese equivalent. In this one, you will have to align / superimpose four small blobs of the same color so that they disappear and earn you points. But beware, with Puyo Puyo, the important thing is the combos. The game will thus have fun combining the two licenses according to many game modes, such as Exchange, which alternates Puyo Puyo and Tetris at a regular pace. Icing on the cake: everything can be done with two players.

Baba Is You

Despite its sometimes particularly tough puzzles, Baba Is You is a game that actually adapts perfectly to small sessions. Why is that ? Because its puzzles are based on a simple principle – at least in appearance – and a very readable graphic style. If you haven’t heard of Baba is You: it’s a puzzle game where you can literally change the rules of the game, by aligning blocks. Place the elements “Baba” (your little hero) “East” and “Pebbles” and your character will turn into a sublime rock. What to be more resistant and for example cross a lava flow. The levels of Baba is You also have the advantage of being short and very distinct. Something to rack your brains for a few minutes.

Captain Toad Treasure Tracker

Still in the puzzle game category, here comes Captain Toad Treasure Tracker. It’s a game originally released on Wii U, arrived on Nintendo Switch in 2018, and which features Mario’s very famous sidekick. For his own adventure, the hero must unearth treasures in levels that play a lot on the perspectives. It will therefore be necessary to take advantage of the advantages of the Nintendo Switch (touch screen, gyroscope) to rotate the levels and get your hands on all their riches. Like Baba is You, Captain Toad relies on very short game sequences, which are ideal for short trips. There is also a co-op mode.

10-20 min ride

super mario odyssey

Inevitably, a longer journey opens the way to sessions on “more complex” games, where you have to invest more, but which cannot afford to drag on too much either. On this point, the great Super Mario Odyssey is a candidate of choice. The adventures of the most famous mustachioed plumber are suitable for a few minutes of play as well as for longer sessions. Everything is made possible thanks to the “Moons”, famous rewards which replace the traditional Stars and which can be hidden almost anywhere in the levels. A point which had also been a little disappointed when the title was released, but which adapts perfectly to the nature of the Nintendo Switch. Mario Odyssey, a reference on this machine.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe

Another unmissable feature of the Big N console: Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, which has just inaugurated its “Additional Circuits Pass” already adding eight new tracks – and forty more by the end of next year – to the 48 that are already present. Suffice to say that there is plenty to do. You have probably already understood this: with its fast, dynamic and very pleasant races, there is no need to spend a lot of time on Mario Kart to get your fix. Between 10 and 20 minutes of play gives you time to work on your best time on your favorite race, or chain a complete Grand Prix in the hope of having the famous three stars everywhere. Better: if you are with a friend, it gives you the opportunity to take on a little challenge with the multiplayer.

Kirby and the Forgotten World

It’s all hot and it’s just been released on Nintendo Switch: it’s Kirby and the Forgotten World. These are the first adventures of the little pink ball in 3D. For the occasion, the levels and the formula of the chubby hero open up, leaving more room for exploration and secrets. Even so, we are clearly not in the presence of a Mario Odyssey-bis: here, the levels are rather short and very distinct, which allows you to start a small game even on a short trip. Above all, Kirby and the Forgotten World also includes a Treasure Route, with even more condensed areas but with a higher challenge. You’ll be spoiled for choice. Not to mention the fact of returning to a level already visited to find other secrets.

20-30 min ride

We finally come to more comfortable gaming sessions, which leave time to overcome a challenge that can give a hard time. In this category, what’s better than a rogue-lite? For a few years now, the master in the field has been called Hades, from the Supergiant Games studio. The title is simply a form of culmination for the genre, thanks to excellent gameplay, modifiers embodied by the gods of Greek mythology, and a story that perfectly accommodates starting over and over again. You will have understood it: a very good game to have a good time. You will only have to cross your fingers not to arrive at your destination during a boss. If so, it’s simple: put the Switch to sleep.

Dead Cells

Another rogue-lite that also caused a lot of talk when it was released: Dead Cells, produced by Bordeaux-based Motion Twin. Here, no isometric view à la Hades, but a really effective 2D, which is also based on 3D assets to bring its characters to life. On Dead Cells, what impresses the most is the pleasure you feel after a few minutes of play. With the right upgrades, your character will be able to dash through levels and smash through enemies at top speed. Of course, you will have to be careful not to do anything either: composing your build carefully and paying attention to your health are key elements to get to the end of the game. So don’t be too greedy.

Into The Breach

When the creators of the excellent FTL: Faster than Light are working on a new title, in other words, expectations are high. And that’s good, because the tactical game Into The Breach did not disappoint at all when it was released in 2017. Beneath its apparent simplicity lies a game with a pretty crazy depth. Your goal: to prevent the alien invader from inflicting damage on planet Earth, on boards of eight by eight squares. To do this, you will have three units available as well as the actions of the opponents in the next rounds. You will therefore have to systematically weigh the pros and cons between risks and benefits to get the most out of your machines without taking too much damage. Added to this are side quests and ways to upgrade your ships. It’s simple yes, but far from being simplistic.

Family trip

51 Worldwide Games

Finally, a little bonus for a family trip, 51 Worldwide Games. You’ve probably heard of 42 Timeless Nintendo DS Games. Well the game that interests us is almost the same thing but on a new medium and with nine additional games. The idea is simple: provide great board game classics in a clear and compact way. We thus find chess, the equivalent of Power 4, darts, checkers, etc. Of course, when possible, there is local multiplayer, which can go from two to four on a single Switch (it is also possible to link them together for more readability). The icing on the cake: clear explanations to discover new classics.
