The House of the Dragon series in a nutshell
House of the Dragon is the first series from the extended universe of Game of Thrones, but don’t expect a sequel. Indeed, it is a prequel announced and orchestrated by HBO Max since 2019. The filming of the series began in April 2021. If you are a fan of GoT for its intrigues and its political twists, its action and the deaths , sometimes unexpected, charismatic characters (you know what it’s all about…), you won’t be disappointed. House of the Dragon is directly inspired by George RR Martin’s novel: Fire and Blood. This name alone says it all!
The synopsis of the series House of the Dragon
Say goodbye to Jon Snow, Tyrion Lannister and Daenerys. Here we jump 200 years into the past. House of the Dragon goes trace the events that led to House Targaryen’s downfall following his total rule over Westeros. This event is called the Dance of the Dragons, a war for the succession to the Iron Throne tearing House Targaryen apart and beginning the extinction of the dragons. We find at the heart of the plot this internal conflict embellished with fire-breathing lizards, enough to rekindle the flame of GOT fans, especially after an end to the saga that did not convince everyone. Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith), referred to as the “rogue prince”, plays a pivotal role in family tensions.
The release date of the House of the Dragon series
After a trailer unveiled on Tuesday, October 5, 2021, fans were starting to get impatient. However, the wait won’t be long. The first episode is expected for August 21, 2022 in the United States and on the night of August 22 in France, around 3am to be precise. Book your evening now and prepare yourself mentally. Why ? If you become attached to a character, you are not immune to seeing it disappear without warning. For the moment, no budget has been communicated, but remember that each episode of the last seasons of Game of Thrones represented nearly 15 million dollars.
The SVOD service of the House of the Dragon series in France
House of the Dragon will be broadcast on HBO Max, and in France on MyCanal and OCS simultaneously as in replay. This is not surprising since Game Of Thrones was already going through these same distribution platforms. For information, the series is composed of 10 episodes. Currently, only one season has been announced, although HBO programming director Casey Bloys told The Hollywood Reporter, “If I had to bet, I’d say there’s a good chance House of the Dragon has a season 2.” Prepare your best Channel codes to be able to follow the series as quickly as possible, because unfortunately the networks will once again become fertile ground for spoilers.
The creatives behind the House of the Dragon series
It is none other than one of the main directors of Game of Thrones who is in charge, namely Miguel Sapochnik. After directing several outstanding episodes including the famous Season 6 Battle of the Bastards, he is now the full showrunner of House of the Dragon. He is accompanied by Clare Kilner (Snowpiercer) and Geeta V. Patel (Superstore). In the scenario, we find Ryan Condalan author who has already worked on the Colony series. Charmaine DeGrate (The 100) and Claire Kiechel (Watchmen) are also in the game. At last, Ramin Djawadi is back to music composition. Let’s hope he brings us a new masterclass worthy of the credits of GoT.
The cast of the House of the Dragon series
Who says Game of Thrones, also says actors and actresses with little onions. From the first trailer, we saw Matt Smith (Doctor Who, The Crown) interpret Daemon Targaryen, one of the protagonists. Always in the same House, Paddy Considine (Hot Fuzz) slips into the skin of King Viserys I Targaryen and Emma D’Arcy (Truth Seekers) in that of Rhaenyra Targaryen. We also find Olivia Cook (Ready Player One) as Alicent Hightower, wife of Viserys I and Rhys Ifans (The Amazing Spider-Man) in that of Otto Hightower, his father. If the series follows the plot of George RR Martin’s book, the fate of the Targaryens and the Hightowers will be intertwined.
House of the Dragon Series Trailer & Artwork
In the short trailer released in the month of October 2021, we can see that the realization is close to that of Game of Thrones, whether in terms of plans or colorimetry. However, the flames dominate. These inseparable flames of the Targaryens and their dragons suggest blood will be shed in abundance, as their motto emphasizes. Despite a completely renewed cast, fans will not be disoriented. The sets may even seem very familiar to you… the throne room of Port-Réal in mind. Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith) promises us gods, kings, fire and blood. We are waiting for that!
