2K Games allowed us to freely explore an optional area of Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands for several hours with the choice of the class of Sowing Death (The Graveborn) or Trucidopathe (The Stabbomancer). This game session was an opportunity to take control of the title and test the fights, the loot system and the character management. Our overview (or preview) therefore focuses on the gameplay elements mentioned above.

Tiny Tina’s Syndrome

Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands is a first-person action-RPG in which the eccentric and whimsical Tiny Tina guides one to four players through a tabletop role-playing campaign to be experienced online or locally. This fan-favorite Borderlands character takes on the role of Game Master here.and tells the epic and offbeat saga of a group of wandering adventurers in a world of Heroic-Fantasy imagined by a bulbous GM.

The title developed by Gearbox Software studios essentially takes up the gameplay mechanics of Borderlands 3. As for the story, the latter begins after the events of Tiny Tina’s Assault on Dragon Keep. However, it is not necessary to have traveled the extension of Borderlands 2 released in June 2013 to enjoy this new adventure stamped 2K Games.

No need to take side roads to describe the experience offered by Gearbox Software. That of Wonderlands is more or less that of Borderlands altered to stick to the universe of heroic-fantasy born from the fertile imagination of Tiny Tina. Vault Hunters who have proven themselves on Borderlands 3 will not be out of place. On the contrary, they will find their marks after a few minutes spent in this fantastic world.

The confrontations, very numerous and smoothly conducted, revolve around the mastery of firearms, the use of magical powers and careful management of distance. Despite a universe of heroic-fantasy that foreshadowed an increased presence of melee combat, the games are played to the rhythm of all kinds of pop-guns. We must recognize the studios have a certain talent for making these pellet distributors pleasant in the hands, who express themselves all the more in the face of a varied bestiary influenced by the genre of fantasy in the broadest sense.

Magic is no exception. The spells (or spells) as well as the Action Skills prove to be formidable on the battlefield and set the environments ablaze with a thousand lights to the point of becoming real sound and light shows at times. For the rest, Tiny Tina’s Wonderland recites scales from the Borderlands saga with its share of crazy quests, its light dialogues, its artificial intelligence which takes precedence by the number and this habit of never taking anything seriously. Tina’s involvement in the adventure and her propensity to change everything on a throw of the dice (in her head) remain a mystery carefully guarded by Gearbox Software.

Tiny Tina's Wonderlands: A Heroic-Fantasy spin off worthy of the Borderlands saga?

Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands, like the Borderlands saga from which this spin-off comes, gives pride of place to loot and RPG mechanics. We did not have the honor of a character created from scratch by us during this preview. The creation and modification of avatars are announced as much richer and more open than in previous studio productions. However, the Sème-la-death and the Trucidopathes proposed for the test had the respondent, and especially put forward the different approaches offered by this Action-RPG.

Gearbox Software masters its formula on the fingertips, which is not surprising. The canon episodes made avatar customization a real passion and this fantastic version of the Looter-Shooter does the same at the risk of simply copying and pasting its predecessors. The interface has changed very little since Borderlands 3, and the same goes for the majority of game mechanics, with the exception of the character editor, always with rich and optimal customization of the hero in mind. here called Hand of Fate.

Admittedly, the title of 2K Games modifies its formula a little in order to be one with this colorful fantastic universe whose artistic direction “Cel Shading” takes up the visual fundamentals of the series. It must be recognized that the options offered to players are more numerous and that the loot remains as abundant as ever. Items rain down with each chest opened, with each enemy defeated to the point of having to make difficult choices. The generosity of Gearbox Software in this area is no longer to be proven and yet the studios prove it once again.

Tiny Tina's Wonderlands: A Heroic-Fantasy spin off worthy of the Borderlands saga?

Our impressions

Gearbox Software never ventures off-road with Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands. This fantastical spin-off from the Borderlands saga takes a tried-and-true “Looter-Shooter” formula, and tweaks it just enough to deliver a refreshing experience. Its “tabletop role-playing game” dimension and its whimsical narrator could allow this Action-RPG to emancipate itself (or not) and thus become a unique and therefore memorable adventure. Tiny Tina gives us an appointment on March 25, 2022 to find out for sure.
