News good plan PS5: the best SSD reaches a crazy price on Amazon
For people dropped, SSDs are the machines that have replaced old hard drives. They are more compact, more resistant and faster than the latter. Today, SSDs are found in all gaming PCs… and in next-gen consoles like the PS5. In this market, some models are clearly above the rest and Western Digital’s SN850 is one of them. Good news: it is currently in big promotion on Amazon!
Excellent price from Amazon for the WD_BLACK SN850 NVMe SSD! An elite SSD for the PS5
Our title surely intrigues you. You still need to have a lot of confidence to say that a product is THE best in its class. Well know that this assertion does not come from us but from Mark Cerney. Who is Mark Cerny? Quite simply the architect of the PS5 himself. If he took the floor to recommend this model it is because he considers it the best.
Let us specify all the same that the mark does not pay us to say that, and, a priori, it did not pay Mark Cerny either. Another clarification: this SSD works perfectly well with the PS5, but it can also be inserted in a fixed PC as a laptop, just to give your bikes a boost. As long as you have a free M.2 portyou have room for the SN850.
We will come back in more detail on the characteristics of the machine a little further down. Remember for the moment that this is a super simple fighter to install (one connection and off you go, it’s “plug and play”). Like all premium products, the launch price was a bit salty: €299 for 1 TB of storage space.
In reality, the SN850 is more often offered at just over 200€. Amazon also displays a crossed out price of €214, the standard price. Well, at the moment, the 1 TB WD_Black SN850 is sold for only €169! We advise you to hurry, at this price, stocks are certainly not unlimited.
SSD SN 850: the elite for the PS5
Attention, it is here that this article will become a tad more technical.
In the wonderful world of SSDs, there are models from several different generations. First to arrive, SATA SSDs are the cheapest and the only ones compatible with really old PCs… but they are also the slowest (by far).
Today, most SSDs sold are PCIe NVMe gen 3 or gen 4 models. Logically, the 4th generation models are much more efficient than the 3rd generation, but they are also more expensive. That’s it for the basics.
An SSD not only makes it possible to transfer and store data quickly, but also to influence the loading time of your games as well as your operating systems. The PS5 is a console that fully needs its power. Without a particularly fast SSD, the gaming experience will be altered. The Sony console is only compatible with PCIe gen 4 SSDs. So, if you want to increase its storage capacity, you absolutely need one of the best models on the market.
The SN850 is an even faster racehorse than the SSD already present in the PS5! If the numbers speak to you, this model goes up to 7000 MB/s read and 5300 MB/s write. Apart from the Firecuda 530, few models currently on the market exceed it.
Please note that this version of the SN850 is sold with a heat sink already installed, so the SSD is completely ready to use for the PS5. It’s slightly more expensive, but at least you don’t have to buy one except a little cheap.
Everything you need to know about SSDs for PS5
How to increase PS5 storage space?
There are two ways to expand your PS5’s storage, via an external hard drive (HDD) or via an SSD to slot into your console. However, only with an internal SSD will you be able to run games.
How to install an internal SSD on the PS5?
To do this, you will need a size 1 Phillips screwdriver. After making sure that the console is unplugged, lay it down and position it in front of you. Remove the cover and then unscrew the SSD expansion slot cover. Remove the screws, plug in the SSD and screw it in. All you have to do is close the cover of the space dedicated to the SSD and replace the outer cover. Plug the console back in and follow the PS5 format utility instructions so you can use your new SSD.
Which internal SSDs are compatible with the PS5?
Currently, due to very strict rules for integrating an SSD, only a few PCIe 4.0 models can be used. With a heatsink, we will remember the WD_Black SN850 SSD, and then, in the category without heatsink, you can count on the Sabrent 2Tb Rocket 4 Plus, the Samsung 980 Pro or the Crucial P5 Plus.
