Mazepin clears up Russian military service rumors

Mazepin debuted in Formula 1 earlier this year with Haas from the Formula 2, and his best result to date was 14th at the recent Azerbaijan GP.

However, rumors and articles emerged last week suggesting that Mazepin may be forced to complete military service in his native Russia after comments attributed to his father, Dmitry, during a financial event in St. Petersburg.

Military service in Russia generally covers a period of one year for men between the ages of 18 and 27, although with exceptions.

Mazepin said in response to the rumor that he was “aware that there has been a bit of discussion,” but explained that he was already doing the required classes to meet his requirements along with his degree in the Moscow State University.

“For my part, you know, the situation is very clear,” Mazepin said.

“I study at university, and the way it works in Russia is that there is compulsory military service, and there are two ways to serve, if you are fit enough.”

“The first option is to finish college and do service for a year. And option two is that if you are judged to be fit enough in terms of fitness and education results, you can move on to something called an army of elite, which is done in a completely different way. “

“It’s one day a week and there you learn to be a reserve officer. And it lasts three years, but it’s only one day a week, and it’s basically done in class.”

“That’s what I’ve been doing for two years. And obviously I’m going to keep doing it for another year to graduate as a reserve officer.”

“Five days ago, I passed my final exam in college to finish my first four years, and I’m going to advance to a second bachelor’s degree in the next two years.”

Mazepin has studied economy and languages through his initial bachelor’s degree, which he also completed alongside his GP3 and Formula 2 racing role in recent years.
