TV frustration at the EM ….
For the first time in German TV history, an EM game was not played on public broadcasters, but exclusively on a pay TV broadcaster. And there are massive problems at the start.
“A perfect football Saturday is waiting for you,” said MagentaTV on Saturday morning: “From 2 p.m. you will only see the match between Wales and Switzerland on MagentaTV EXCLUSIVELY.”
For many users, however, it should be anything but a perfect football Saturday. Apparently the servers of the Telekom subsidiary were overwhelmed by the rush.
TV disaster at Telekom!
Disappointed and angry customers and interested parties complained on social media that they could not watch the game. Instead, many got the same error message: “Error 503 Backend fetch failed.”
The hashtags #magentatv and #freetv were trending on Twitter.
ARD and ZDF acquired sub-licenses
According to information from WELT, the servers came to a standstill about a quarter of an hour before the start of the game (3 p.m.) due to the rush to the site. It was therefore no longer possible to take out a new subscription.
For the time being, there was no statement from MagentaTV, nor was there any communication via Twitter. Internally, there should have been talk of a “performance disruption due to overload”.
Around 4.10 p.m. there was a statement on Twitter: “TECHNICAL PROBLEMS – The booking process on our system for MagentaTV is currently overloaded! We apologize for the inconvenience and are working on a solution. “
In 2019, Telekom surprisingly acquired the rights to all European Championship games. MagentaTV is the only broadcaster to show all 51 games. ARD and ZDF acquired sub-licenses for 41 games. Wales against Switzerland was now the first game that only ran on MagentaTV.
