The fatal crane accident in Göttingen could have been triggered by manipulation. According to the public prosecutor, a kind of automatic parking brake on the crane was out of order.

In the meantime, the identity of the deceased has been clarified according to information from the NDR in Lower Saxony. It is a construction worker from Southeast Europe. The public prosecutor’s office has initiated the autopsy of the victim. This announced spokesman Andreas Buick on Monday. The 42-year-old crane operator is being investigated for negligent homicide. He may have moved too much weight so that the crane overturned. According to Buick, the crane operator is registered in the Sauerland. Originally he comes from the former Yugoslavia.

Second worker in a coma

Clarifying the dead person’s identity had proved difficult. A police spokeswoman told the NDR in Lower Saxony that the man had no papers with him. In addition, there were language barriers with the subcontractor who had employed him. A second worker was seriously injured in the accident. According to the police, his condition is critical. The 40-year-old man was put into an artificial coma after an emergency operation. After the accident, it was rescued from the rubble with heavy equipment.

Representatives of the trade inspectorate, the public prosecutor’s office and the police were on site in Göttingen-Esebeck on Monday to look at the scene of the accident.
