Since US President Joe Biden took office, the number of illegal crossings on the border with Mexico has risen rapidly. Lara Trump, daughter-in-law of Donald Trump, has therefore called the border residents to take up arms.

It is a call that is causing a stir: Lara Trump, daughter-in-law of former US President Donald Trump, has called on her fellow citizens living near the Mexican border on television to use gun violence against illegal migrants if necessary.

“I guess they’d better arm themselves and get rifles and get ready, and maybe they’ll have to take matters into their own hands,” the Republican replied on conservative US broadcaster Fox News when asked what to do with the Americans and American women in the southern US should advise given the increase in illegal immigration. “That should never happen. These people should never make this dangerous journey here. It’s bad for Americans, it’s bad for migrants, it’s bad all around.”

Trump also attacked US Vice President Kamala Harris for her attempts to tackle the causes of the crisis during her trip to Guatemala and Mexico last week: “She thinks she can just laugh at the crisis at the border, and that is embarrassing,” said the 38-year-old. For the border guards: it must be “insulting” to hear about migrants crossing the border. “It’s like making a mockery of them. It’s disgusting and shameful to see.”

Sharp headwinds for Lara Trump on Twitter

Trump was heavily criticized on social media for her statements: “This is dangerous,” wrote the Democratic politician Russell Foster from Texas on Twitter. “The former president’s daughter-in-law calls on people to shoot immigrants. It is worse with multiple mass shootings in Texas and elsewhere in the past few days. This could lead to an increase in hate crimes across the country.”

Photojournalist Zach Roberts tweeted, “Just casually saying on a national broadcast that people should take up arms and start shooting at immigrants. That’s where we are.”

Sharp words also came from the actress Rosanna Arquette: “Lara Trump calls on people to commit murders on the border,” wrote the Golden Globe winner.

And liberal writer and online activist Majid Padellan warned: I don’t know who needs to hear this, but you should never take any advice from Lara Trump, or ANY Trump, telling you you’re on people on the border or anything where to shoot. “

Harris is supposed to take care of migration problems

The US government is under pressure because of the large number of migrants arriving on the southern border. The numbers have grown rapidly since President Joe Biden took office in January. In May, the US authorities apprehended 180,034 illegal immigrants in one month, the highest number in more than 20 years. The Republican Party accuses Biden of causing a crisis on the border with his more liberal migration policy.

Like his predecessor Trump, the president is betting that migrants en route to the USA will be stopped in Mexico and Central America. He has put Harris in charge of reducing illegal migration by addressing the root causes of displacement in Central America.

Last week, the Vice President was on her first trip abroad to Guatemala and Mexico and discussed, among other things, the coordination of border protection efforts in the region with their Presidents. Potential migrants: inside she warned: “Do not come”. The US would enforce the law. “If you come to our border, you will be sent back”.

Biden has so far stuck to the regulation introduced under Trump to reject all undocumented migrants at the southern border due to the corona pandemic – including asylum seekers. The only exception are unaccompanied minors.
