European champion kicks off towards London

CPortugal’s first day at the European 2020 has arrived. The European champion in title enters the field this Tuesday to start defending the unprecedented title won five years ago in France, another of the opponents in this tournament.

The team of quinas starts the participation in Euro’2020 against Hungary, an opponent they already faced in Euro’2016. At the time it resulted in a tie, but an equality that ended up spilling over into glory for the national colors.

A victory is now required, unlike what happened in France, to start building the path towards the final… at Wembley. The road is long, so save the suffering for later stages, because the procession is long and this has only just begun.

Looking ahead to this match, Portuguese coach Fernando Santos assumed that his players will “give everything to give joy to the Portuguese”, but warned that Hungary are a difficult opponent.

The referee for the match, which will kick off at 17:00 at Puskas Arena, will be the Turkish Cuneyt Çakir, the same as the match five years ago in France. Is this a harbinger of the Portuguese dream in London?

Direct Speech Trainers:

Marco Rossi:

Game: We are talking about a team that is the defending champion and that won the League of Nations. It has world-class players, so good that the selector could be the driver or the equipment guy. If it spoke of a single player, it would be a disgrace to the others.

Portuguese attack: We have to play as a team, in a compact way, close the gaps between the lines and hope that, at the right time, we will have a bit of luck too. We are going to play this game as if it were the last of our careers.

Motivation for the game: Motivation is no longer an issue. If there were any players who were not motivated to participate in a competition like this, they would have to change careers.

Fernando Santos:

Expected between 4 and 5 thousand Portuguese fans: Quite different from what happened in 2016. What message would you like to leave to the Portuguese? In France we were also always behind in numbers, but we were always better. Here we will have over 11 million cheering us on. There is always a Portuguese vibrating for us. I want to tell all the Portuguese that we are going to give everything to make the Portuguese happy.

Does Portugal have more responsibility than in 2016? Portugal has always assumed the desire to win a great competition. Of course, from 2016 onwards everything changed. In 2016 we already had the confidence to reach that goal and now we are also assuming the candidacy of achieving a victory at Wembley, as other teams will also have.

The statistics give Portugal an advantage over its Magyar counterparts: I don’t look at stats, I look at the games that Hungary played with Iceland, in the play-off, with Poland, and more recently with Ireland. And I look at the Hungarian selector’s statements. That’s what matters to me. I see a team that will have great support from the public, and that will force us to be at our highest level.
