Scientists have examined 24,000 blood samples and are of the opinion: There were corona infections in the USA as early as December 2019 – much earlier than previously thought. There is also new knowledge about where the first cases occurred.

DAccording to a new study, the coronavirus already appeared in the USA in December 2019, weeks before the first confirmed infection in January 2020. The first cases were in the US states of Illinois and Massachusetts, as reported on Tuesday in the journal ” Clinical Infectious Diseases “study published by the US National Institutes of Health (NIH) shows.

For their investigation, the scientists analyzed 24,000 blood samples taken from volunteers between January 2 and March 18, 2020. Antibodies against the Sars-CoV-2 virus were detected in nine of them and only appear two weeks after infection.

The first positive samples came from test subjects from the US states of Illinois and Massachusetts and were taken on January 7 and 8, 2020, respectively. According to the researchers, this indicates that those affected were infected with the virus as early as the end of December. Up until now, New York and Seattle were considered gateways for the virus.

“The antibody tests allow us to better understand the spread of Sars-CoV-2 in the United States during the early stages of the epidemic in the country, when testing options were limited,” said Keri Althoff, epidemiologist at Johns Hopkins’ University and lead author of the study. The US health authority CDC came to similar results as the NIH in November last year.
