Mask requirement: In which federal states is it still valid at school?

AIn view of the continuing decline in the number of infections, the federal states are withdrawing more and more corona restrictions. Mask requirements for schools are also being relaxed further. It is becoming increasingly difficult to keep track of which rules are currently still in force in which federal state. These are the current regulations regarding the mask requirement in schools in the 16 federal states.

Baden-Wuerttemberg

From the week after next, students in classrooms in Baden-Württemberg no longer have to wear masks in class under certain circumstances. This was announced by Minister of Social Affairs Manfred Lucha (Greens) on Tuesday in Stuttgart. If there has been no corona infection at a school for two weeks and the incidence in the region is below 35, there is no longer any obligation to wear a mask in class in “all types of schools”. Bayern

Bavaria’s students can take off their corona protective masks again in the open air. In the breaks there is no longer a mask requirement, the same applies to hiking days or excursions, said State Chancellor Florian Herrmann (CSU) on Tuesday in Munich. However, he emphasized that the existing Infection Protection Ordinance would not be changed for this, rather it would only be made more precise. “This is not a fundamental departure from the mask,” said Herrmann. Berlin

Schoolchildren in Berlin must initially continue to wear medical masks in classrooms after the summer vacation. The obligation to wear a medical mask applies in closed rooms in Berlin schools in the first two weeks after the summer vacation, said a spokesman for the education administration on Tuesday. The goal should be to stop chains of infection that started during the holidays. It is then planned to lift the mask requirement if the infection rate allows it. Brandenburg

To protect against corona infections, pupils and teachers at the secondary schools in Brandenburg should still wear masks after the summer vacation. Education Minister Britta Ernst (SPD) said on Tuesday in the information radio of the RBB. “I am in favor of a cautious start to the new school year,” said Ernst. Therefore, there will continue to be an obligation to test. Primary school students should, however, be able to take off their masks before the summer holidays. Bremen

Since mid-May, elementary school students in Bremen no longer have to wear a mask. In secondary schools, all employees, students and visitors must still wear masks. Summer holidays start: July 22nd

In Hesse, wearing a medical or FFP2 mask is currently not compulsory at school, but it is recommended. Summer holidays start: July 19th

Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania

In Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, students no longer have to wear masks in class since last week. Summer holidays start: June 21st

North Rhine-Westphalia

In North Rhine-Westphalia, it is currently still the case that all people who are in a school building or on school premises as part of school use are obliged to wear a medical mask during this time. Despite the further decline in the incidence figures, they are sticking to it – for the time being. “We should continue to act prudently. Tests and masks provide security and secure school operations, ”said School Minister Yvonne Gebauer (FDP) last Wednesday in the state parliament in Düsseldorf. Summer holidays start: July 5th

Lower Saxony

In Lower Saxony, all school years in a district with an incidence below 35 are no longer required to wear a mask in class. Outside of classrooms and workrooms, however, there are still specially marked areas in which, due to the local conditions, compliance with the distance requirement cannot be guaranteed. These are usually corridors, stairwells, toilets and, if necessary, also playgrounds. Summer holidays start: July 22nd

Rhineland-Palatinate

From next Monday, students in Rhineland-Palatinate will no longer have to wear a mask in class. The state government is reacting to the lower number of corona infections, as Education Minister Stefanie Hubig (SPD) announced on Tuesday after a cabinet meeting in Mainz. The new regulation applies as long as the seven-day incidence of corona infections remains below a value of 35. On Monday it was 16.0 nationwide. On the way to the place in the classroom, the protective mask should be worn, said Hubig. Summer holidays start: July 19th

Saarland

In Saarland, students no longer have to wear a mask in class from this Thursday. The Ministry of Education in Saarbrücken announced that the Council of Ministers decided on Tuesday in view of the lower corona numbers. In the school building and on the way to school when using local public transport, however, the obligation to wear a mask remains. Summer holidays start: July 19th

Saxony

Since Monday, students and teachers in Saxony in municipalities whose seven-day incidence is stable below 35 no longer have to wear a mask. Summer holiday start: July 26th

Saxony-Anhalt

Saxony-Anhalt wants to relax the obligation to wear a mask in schools. “There is no mask requirement on school grounds and outdoor areas as well as in lessons,” said Education Minister Marco Tullner (CDU) on Tuesday in Magdeburg. The cabinet decided this by mutual agreement. In future, mouth and nose protection should therefore only be required outside of lessons in buildings, for example in the corridors. Up until now, however, students and teachers were required to wear a mask in class seven and up. The new regulations should come into force before the weekend. Summer holidays start: July 2nd

Schleswig-Holstein

In Schleswig-Holstein it is still compulsory to wear a mask in all schools. Education Minister Karin Prien (CDU) said on Tuesday that she is currently assuming that there will be a mask requirement for two weeks at the beginning of the new school year. This buffer after the holidays is particularly important with regard to those returning from vacation. Summer holidays start: June 21st

Thuringia

In Thuringia, the mask requirement applies if the municipal incidence value is over 100 for all grade levels in class and on the entire school premises. If the incidence is over 50, it applies to all grades and in the school building. With an incidence between 35 and 50 in class for all seventh graders and for everyone in the school building, with an incidence below 35 for everyone in the school building, but no longer during class.
