Alaphilippe storms into the yellow jersey in Landerneau

26.06.2021  | (rsn) – Julian Alaphilippe (Deceuninck – Quick-Step) won the first yellow jersey with a superior victory at the start of the 108th Tour de France. After an attack 2.5 kilometers from the finish, the world champion from France decided the first stage over 197.8 kilometers from Brest to Landerneau, which was overshadowed by two serious mass falls, as a soloist with an eight-second lead over a group of 20 pursuers and celebrated his own sixth day win on a tour of France.

The Australian Michael Matthews (BikeExchange) secured second place ahead of the Slovenian Primoz Roglic (Jumbo – Visma), the Australian Jack Haig (Bahrain Victorious) and the Dutchman Wilco Kelderman (Bora – hansgrohe). Defending champion Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) finished sixth at the same time. The best German professional was Kelderman’s team-mate Emanuel Buchmann, who finished 42nd, 1:49 minutes behind.

“I wanted to shake off the sprinters and that worked. When I got them, I had to go full throttle. It’s a great feeling,” beamed Alaphilippe in the first interview.

In the overall standings, the 28-year-old is twelve seconds ahead of Matthews and 14 seconds ahead of Roglic. Kelderman is fifth, 18 seconds behind, followed by Pogacar at the same time.

Alaphilippe also took the lead in the points classification. Tour debutant Ide Schelling (Bora – hansgrohe) picked up the first mountain jersey from the group of the day. Pogacar wears the white jersey of the best young professional on the 2nd stage, Jumbo – Visma is in first place in the team classification.
