The Delta variant worries more and more. Australia imposed on Saturday June 26 the total reconfinement for two weeks of the city of Sydney, facing an outbreak of new cases of Covid-19 caused by this mutation. More contagious, the variant continues its meteoric spread across the planet forcing several countries to impose new restrictions.

First identified in India in April, it is now present in at least 85 countries, according to the WHO. He has already been responsible for an epidemic recovery in the United Kingdom for a few weeks.

For his part, faced with an increase “dangerous and alarming” of cases of contamination with this variant, Bangladesh will impose a new extremely severe containment from Monday.

In Portugal, the Delta variant, which caused a rebound in contagions, has become predominant, according to data made public by the Directorate General of Health. It represents more than 51% of new cases in Portugal and more than 70% in the Lisbon region. The country has decided to tighten restrictions in the most affected municipalities such as Lisbon, where hours and the capacity of restaurants and shops have again been reduced.

Israel had already reinstated the obligation to wear masks in closed public places and businesses on Friday after an increase in cases, in a country which prided itself on being the first to come out of the health crisis thanks to a vast vaccination campaign.

In South Africa, the Delta variant is also behind a surge in new infections, scientists said on Saturday, as the government considers further restrictions. The country recorded 18,762 new infections on Saturday, the highest daily figure since January.
