Curb the spread of the delta variant with a faster second vaccination?

The concern about the further spread of the delta variant of the coronavirus is a topic that is dominating the debates at the moment. Politicians like Janosch Dahmen, Member of the Bundestag, and FDP MP Andrew Ullmann are calling for the intervals between the first and second vaccinations for mRNA vaccines to be reduced in order to increase protection in the population more quickly.

The virologist Martin Stürmer said this morning in the NDR Info radio interview that it was important to keep the infection rate in Germany as low as possible in order to prevent new outbreak areas of the Delta variant. As many people as possible should be vaccinated twice as quickly as possible. You shouldn’t be careless and loosen up too much at once. Stürmer believes that it makes sense to have a test for all those returning to travel.

Bavaria wants comprehensive controls on return travelers

The state of Bavaria would like to enforce strict corona controls for travelers returning. According to Health Minister Klaus Holetschek, the reason is the delta variant of the virus. The CSU politician told “Bild am Sonntag” that vaccination cards and corona tests should not only be randomly checked at border crossings and airports. Bavaria is therefore currently coordinating with the federal government to ensure close controls. A test requirement applies to those arriving by land who have stayed in risk areas, as well as to air travelers from abroad in general. According to preliminary findings from England, the Robert Koch Institute assumes that the delta mutant is more easily transmitted than other variants of the coronavirus.

Government gives hope for major events

The federal government assumes that major events with thousands of participants will again be allowed in autumn. State Secretary for Economic Affairs Thomas Bareiß (CDU) told the “Welt am Sonntag” that as the vaccination rate increases, he is confident that it will soon be back to normal. If everyone has received a vaccination offer, there is no longer any reason not to allow events with 10,000 visitors or more. Bareiß announced that it would work for the most uniform rules possible in the federal states. Sales in the concert and event industry had slumped by 80 percent last year.
