To fight against this massive abstention, a majority of French people say they are in favor of internet voting, unveils an Odoxa-Backbone consulting survey for Le Figaro and franceinfo, aired Thursday. The idea even arouses “a very strong enthusiasm in the opinion”, according to this study. The measure is approved by 78% of French respondents and by 80% of those who abstained in the first round.
On the other hand, 65% of French people questioned are against the introduction of compulsory voting. They are even 77% among the abstainers of June 20.
The reasons for this weak mobilization are multiple according to the surveys of Ipsos / Sopra Steria for France Televisions carried out before the first round of the ballot. They show that voters did not always fully understand the challenges of regional and departmental elections. In addition, they did not have the opportunity to use these interim elections to exercise a sanction vote against the government, since the presidential majority does not rule any region.
