Pediatricians disagree with Lauterbach when it comes to child vaccination
So far, the Stiko has only recommended a corona vaccination for children with previous illnesses. Some experts, including SPD man Lauterbach, want to change that. The President of the German Society for Child and Adolescent Medicine is critical of the move.
KIn the debate about the risks posed by the delta variant for children, doctors and adolescents have backed the assessment of the Standing Vaccination Commission (Stiko). “In principle, this recommended corona vaccination for children and adolescents between the ages of twelve and 17 only with certain previous illnesses,” said the President of the German Society for Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine, Jörg Dötsch, of the “Rheinische Post” (Tuesday edition).
“According to the current state of knowledge, the Delta variant does not change anything,” said the director of the Clinic for Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine at the Cologne University Clinic of the newspaper. However, there is always the possibility for the families to come to an individual decision for or against the vaccination together with their pediatrician, said Dötsch.
“I currently rate the health risks from a corona infection for children and adolescents as so low that waiting for new knowledge about vaccination can be an option for hesitant people,” he said. The mortality rate and severity of illness of children and adolescents after a corona infection are similarly low as with seasonal flu. So far there is no evidence that the delta variant will change that.
SPD health expert Karl Lauterbach had previously asked Stiko in view of the strong spread of the Delta variant in many countries to reconsider its restricted recommendation for the corona vaccination of children. “I think it would make sense to vaccinate the children,” said Lauterbach WELT. The politician warned that infecting children with the Delta variant was too risky. The Stiko has not yet issued a general vaccination recommendation for children and adolescents from the age of twelve. She recommends vaccinations only for twelve to 17 year olds with certain pre-existing conditions such as obesity, diabetes and chronic lung diseases.
