Study indicates that Pfizer and Moderna covid vaccines provide immunity for years

The scientific journal ‘Nature’ recently published a study in which it is stated that the formulas developed by the German pharmaceutical company Pfizer / BioNTech and Moderna Inc. are capable of generating a high immune response that could last several years protecting an individual.
The project, which was carried out by researchers at Washington University in St. Louis (UWSL), United States, indicates that people who have completed their vaccination schedule with doses of these brands will not need a booster. It should be noted that this will only be possible as long as a sufficiently powerful and resilient covid-19 variant towards anti-covid vaccines does not emerge.
Scientists analyzed the cases of 14 people who had received both doses of Pfizer, concentrating their research on so-called “germ centers”, sites where antibodies can be trained to more skillfully recognize and fight viruses, which are vital for the production of antibodies. These centers are created from a viral infection or a vaccine.
Ali Ellebedy, Immunologist at the UWSL and responsible for the study, stated that after 15 weeks of observations and only with the application of a single dose, they discovered that the germ centers were still working correctly, which gave a great indication about the duration that this vaccine could have in the human body.
The study also included 41 other participants, all of whom had been immunized with two doses of the Pfizer / BioNTech vaccine; 8 of the patients had previously suffered from COVID-19. The experts removed lymph nodes from the armpits of the test subjects after 3, 4, 5 and 7 weeks, some even provided tissue after 15 weeks of inoculation, counting only on the first dose of the German formula.
With these analyzes, they determined that the patients formed germ centers with B cells that produce antibodies, which target a key covid-19 protein. The application of the second dose promoted an increase in the immune response, which continued to increase despite the fact that the vaccination ended in December 2020.
Study co-author Jane O’Halloran reported that although it was not her goal to compare the effectiveness of vaccination in people with and without a history of the disease, those who already had COVID-19 increased their antibody levels considerably.
Last April, Pfizer and Moderna assured that their formula would protect immunized patients from COVID-19 for a period of at least 6 months, according to information obtained as a result of the first trials, but the reality is that the pharmaceutical companies had not investigated the long-term response of the human organism and even affirmed the possibility of needing a reinforcement in the future.
Although even with this study it was not possible to find out what the exact durability of the vaccines developed with mRNA technology (Pfizer and Moderna) could be, the researchers rate the results of the project as “a positive indicator” of the long-term effectiveness generated by the vaccines. , adding that it will be the responsibility of the advance of the pandemic if a third dose is required or not.
