The DWD has extended its severe weather warning, which was originally limited to Wednesday evening, until Thursday afternoon. In southern Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, in particular, there could be heavy rain with amounts of between 50 and 80 liters per square meter. This amount roughly corresponds to the average amount of precipitation for an entire month.
Meteorologist: Beware of flooding and aquaplaning
According to the meteorologist Stefan Kreibohm from the NDR weather studio on Hiddensee, local flooding is possible. “We are right in the middle of the action,” said Kreibohm. “The problem is that it will rain for a very long time.” The danger is particularly great in the Haff-Müritz region.
Enormous amounts of rain could fall in Uckermark and Uecker-Randow region
In the area of Uckermark, Penkun, Neustrelitz and Feldberger Seen, according to Kreibohm, up to 100, in some places even up to 200 liters of rain could fall per square meter. There is a high risk of aquaplaning on roads, warned Kreibohm. The reason for the predicted showers and thunderstorms is the low “Xero”, which will shift only a little until Thursday and thus ensure abundant rainfall. On Friday the situation could calm down a bit, it said.
