18 days before the opening ceremony, the Tokyo Games have already started for the France team. Monday July 5, the four flag bearers for the Olympic and Paralympic Games were unveiled on France 2.

Clarisse Agbegnenou and Samir Ait Saïd have been appointed to represent the French delegation at the Olympic Games (July 23-August 8) while Sandrine Martinet and Stéphane Houdet are the lucky ones elected for the Paralympic Games (August 24-September 5).

For the first time, a duo respecting parity has the difficult task of carrying the tricolor at the Olympic Games. The candidates were decided by a vote of the 59 athlete ambassadors appointed by the federations.

Among women, the judokate Clarisse Agbegnenou was the favorite, only the athlete Mélina Robert-Michon seemed to be able to challenge her for the role. The other candidates were Johanne Defay (surfing), Sandrine Gruda (basketball), Maïva Hamadouche (boxing), Kristina Mladenovic (tennis) or Charline Picon (windsurfing). Silver medalist in 2016 in Rio, Agbegnenou will aim for a first Olympic title in Tokyo.

For men, gymnast Samir Ait Saïd was nominated in front of renowned candidates including former Olympic champions Florent Manaudou and Renaud Lavillenie. His designation as standard bearer comes after an individual career contrasted with the Olympic Games. In 2012, he forfeited when he represented a chance for a medal in London. In 2016, in Rio de Janeiro, he was seriously injured in qualifying on the reception of the vault.
