A major blackout affects more than 20,000 sites around the world

Since the end of the afternoon, several sites have been inaccessible. Fnac, Micromania, Airbnb or even PlayStation Network and Steam were among the victims. An outage at Akamai is involved and would affect more than 20,000 sites around the world.

Barely a month after the vast blackout that affected Amazon, Reddit and Twitch, many sites have been inaccessible since late afternoon on Thursday.

Shortly before 6 p.m., several users reported on Twitter and various forums that the Fnac, Micromania, Airbnb, Steam or PSN sites, but also media such as The Parisian, The Figaro or France Info were affected by a new failure. Around 6:45 p.m., Fnac, Steam and even Micromania were again accessible.

A breakdown reminiscent of that of Fastly in June

The Akamai servers, which host these sites, are said to be in question. A problem encountered in June by the company Fastly, another content distribution network on which many websites rely.

On the Downdetector site, which lists the breakdowns of the main sites, there has been a peak in reports since around 5.30 p.m. on the largest sites around the world.

Akamai has acknowledged that there is an ongoing problem with the Edge DNS service. In all, more than 20,000 sites would be affected across the world, including around 100 leading media and sites. In particular, PlayStation gamers have stepped up to the plate to complain about the inability to access their games online through PSN.
