Madonna says she rejected a role in The Matrix

The Matrix might pop with stylised kung-fu chaos and bullet fire, but at one point this groundbreaking dystopian action film was going to star the actual Queen of Pop.

Yep, Madonna herself was offered a role opposite Keanu Reeves and Laurence Fishburne, and we’re wagering it was Trinity (eventually played by Carrie-Anne Moss).

This revelation was shared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon earlier this week, with the musical icon commenting: “Can you believe that? I wanna kill myself. That’s like one of the best movies ever made.

“A teeny-tiny part of me regrets just that one moment in my life.”

The 63-year-old also went on to admit that she could’ve been Catwoman in Tim Burton’s Batman Returns back in 1992, ultimately rejecting the casting, which led to Michelle Pfeiffer’s legendary performance.

“I regret that I turned down Catwoman, that was pretty fierce,” she noted.

Meanwhile, a fourth Matrix instalment titled Resurrections will premiere in cinemas across the world this Christmastime, 18 years since Revolutions came out.

Director Lana Wachowski remembered of returning to this universe during a period of grief: “My brain has always reached into my imagination and one night, I was crying and I couldn’t sleep, and suddenly my brain exploded this whole story.

“And I couldn’t have my mom and dad, I couldn’t talk to my mom, yet suddenly I had Neo and Trinity, arguably the two most important characters in my life. It was immediately comforting to have these two characters again.

“This is what art does, this is what stories do. They comfort us, and they’re important. I was very non-judgemental for myself. But it was so comforting that they were back in my life.”

The Matrix 4 is scheduled for release on December 22, 2021 in cinemas and on HBO Max in the US.
