Social media is reacting to Thor’s depiction in God of War: Ragnarok, with many praising the God of Thunder’s mythology-accurate design.
Fans of both Viking mythology and God of War: Ragnarok are praising developer Sony Santa Monica for its accurate and well-researched depiction of Thor, the God of Thunder.
Following God of War: Ragnarok‘s first gameplay trailer, PlayStation released a handful of character images, confirmed the game’s cast. Alongside series protagonist Kratos (voiced by Christopher Judge), the assets also confirmed that Thor will play a much larger role in the sequel to the 2018 PlayStation 4 exclusive God of War. Teased in the trailer via a shot of his powerful hammer Mjölnir, fans are expressing their enthusiasm for Thor’s design which sticks much closer to how the god is described in traditional Viking mythology.
That’s literally Thor.
Top to bottom, that’s the single-handedly most accurate depiction I’ve seen of him in any movie or game.
His gaze. His red hair. His appetite.
It’s literally all there, but mfs stay wanting a renaissance greco-fied image of a Norse God. pic.twitter.com/e0xzfCx4X6

Many fans complaining about God of War: Ragnarok‘s depiction of Thor are comparing the video game iteration to Marvel’s take on the character. Portrayed by Chris Hemsworth in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the popular superhero version of Thor is often characterized by his well-defined and chiseled physique. While Hemsworth’s God of Thunder is also a gigantic man covered with muscle, God of War‘s Thor is designed to resemble a more traditional strongman aesthetic.
I love this portrayal of Thor. He has a huge appetite so the bigger frame makes sense. He has red hair as he does in the Eddas. Mjolnir has a short handle, which it does. He still looks powerful and like he could beat the heck out of you, which he can. #GodOfWarRagnarok pic.twitter.com/iwYQHh0Cyw

Legit the best Thor design I’ve seen in media recently. Big scary bastard who drinks gallons of beer, eats well, and could tear my head off my body. Proper strongman build.
This is what strong people look like!! https://t.co/39PepLrOSN
