Spain rewards Omara Portuondo with a Gold medal in Fine Arts

The Cuban singer, Omara Portuondo, received the Gold Medal for Merit in Fine Arts, from the hands of the kings of Spain.

A few months ago, the singer celebrated her 90 years of life accompanied by friends and family, in an online concert, from the Sauto Theater in Matanzas.

With a broad artistic career, Omara Portuondo received the award from the Spanish Ministry of Culture and Sports.

In this way, the kings of Spain presented this award at the Palacio de El Pardo, in Madrid. These awards are given with the intention of recognizing the effort and courage of cultural professionals.

The Gold Medal for Merit in Fine Arts is an award that goes to artists who have contributed to the development and dissemination of art.

At the award ceremony, the King of Spain highlighted Omara Portuondo’s contribution to society.

During the quarantine, the singer has recorded an album with Raphael, Dionne Warwick, Gaby Moreno and Carlos Rivera.

The singer shared these words on her social networks:

“Very happy! I have just received the Gold Medal for Merit in Fine Arts from the Kings of Spain and accompanied by my granddaughter Rossio ».

“Thanks to the Ministry of Culture and Sports for this recognition, an honor to be among such valuable personalities.”

Likewise, the kings of Spain presented this award to the actress Rossi de Palma, the theater director Lluís Pasqual, the singers Martirio, Patti Smith, Gilberto Gil, Maria Bethânia, Ruben Blades and Camilo Sexto.

This year’s awards included the awards for the years 2018 and 2019 because the pandemic prevented the ceremony from being held.
