- The contest returns with five top-tier performances despite the uncertainty in international travel
- From Matthieu Saglio, who left a great memory on his previous visit, to the people of The Soulomonics of the Marina Alta or to the Valencian Jonatan Penalba; from Antonio Lizana, who is finally coming to Dénia, to a flamenco legend like Lole Montoya
If there is a symbol of culture in Dénia that is the Castell Music. It has been 29 editions. Almost three decades of great music. It could not be celebrated last year, the pandemic prevented it, but it returns in 2021 although it will not do so in its natural habitat, the Esplanade of the Governor, at the top of the Castle, but in the Torrecremada gardens, a more accessible place that has historically also had a lot of Elf for music -it is the usual venue for different dianenses festivals-, which enables easier control to comply with covid regulations.
Despite these obstacles, the quality of the poster is beyond any doubt and it pays special attention to flamenco and Valencian musicians representing very diverse styles: thus, spectators who attend Torrecremada’s proposals will be able to enjoy flamenco fusion of the saxophonist Antonio Lizana and the classic flamenco of a figure like Lole Montoya, the Mediterranean jazz of the French cellist Matthieu Saglio, the root song of Jonatan Penalba or the energetic blues of The Soulomonics
Music at the Castell will be held on weekends July 16-17 and July 23-24 plus the 30th. It will always be at 10.30 pm, although the Torrecremada doors will open at nine in the afternoon. Of the five concerts scheduled, two are free -the one of The Soulmonics and that of Jonathan Penalba- and three are paid -those of Lole Montoya, Antonio Lizana Trío and Lole Montoya-, at a price of 10 euros.
Friday July 16. Lole Montoya & Joselito Acedo: flamenco
The contest will open on July 16 Lole Montoya with A voice and a guitar. It is a true flamenco legend that has indeed been updating its repertoire. She understands classical singing in a transgressive and personal way, which has made her a pioneer and an icon that has crossed borders – one example, Tarantino has used in his soundtracks. Lole Montoya will be accompanied by Joselito Acedo, promising guitarist in the world of flamenco with an outstanding nomination in the Latin Grammy 2015.
Saturday, July 17. Matthieu Saglio Quartet: jazz, classic, world
One of the windows open to jazz in this return of Music to the Catstell is that of Matthieu Saglio Quartet, on the 17th, whose previous intervention in this Dénia contest is still remembered for its intensity. Now he comes with his latest work, The way of the winds. He has recently recorded his music using landscapes of Dénia such as the roads to Cova Tallada and Les Planes. »
With this work the cellist and composer Matthieu Saglio looks inside himself to take stock of his entire career, a unique and singular path, although influenced by the various, changing, surprising winds. There are compositions with solos and improvisations with a marked jazzy character, others with a more classic cut with a soundtrack flavor. There are also rhythms from Africa, Arabic quarter tones, flamenco styles …
Viernes 23 de julio. The Soulmonics: soul and R&B
The Soulmonics , who will star in the free concert on July 23 to present in his native geography, Dénia and the region, his new work Stop the time; much of it was made in full confinement. This group is pure Marina Alta: among its members there are also people from Pedreguer or Sanet. They sing their own songs in English. “We play a lot out there but for us it is a real luxury to do it and especially to enjoy it in our land,” says the singer.
The band is made up of a powerful horn section, vocals, and a rhythm section. His repertoire is full of soul, funk and R&B songs, classic and contemporary, with a touch of rock. His live shows abound with covers of greats of the genre: from Otis Reading, Etta James, Rufus Thomas, through Stevie Wonder, Towerof Power and reaching the present with Eli Paperboy Red, Sharon Jones, Incognito.
In 2016 they were winners of the Imagina Funk 2016 National Black Music Bands Contest, forming part of the festival’s poster in the Imagina Funk Take10 edition in July 2017.
Saturday, July 24. Antonio Lizana Trio: flamenco jazz
Música al Castell settles a pending account, count on the flamenco jazz Antonio Lizana Trio, precursor of a very innovative music and that was an old aspiration of Música al Castell, which had never been able to bring it due to its many commitments over the last years. Now it has been possible.
Antonio Lizana is one of the most famous representatives of the new Flamenco Jazz from southern Spain. Jazz saxophonist, flamenco singer and composer of all his music. In the last three years alone he has performed around three hundred concerts with his band in more than 30 countries. The singer, saxophonist and composer Antonio Lizana presents us with a collection of his own compositions where the songs of his land are intertwined with melodic improvisations that make us travel from traditional flamenco to contemporary jazz.
Friday, July 30. Jonatan Penalba
Another proper name of the autochthonous panorama will be the Valencian Jonatan Penalba, that will lead to the stage of Torrecremada Also free of charge the songs of “Reversions”, a review of verses and music in Valencian during the last day of the cycle.
Born in 1991 in the Valencian town of l’Alcúdia, Jonatan Penalba is already a veteran in the world of song, despite his youth. And it is that very soon he entered the world of traditional music, and has been harbored in a multitude of performances. In Dénia he will present his latest work, “Reversions”.
This album and new show presents us with a Jonatan Penalba slightly different from the one we have known so far, who moves away a little from the traditional sound to get closer to the pop, but without completely forgetting the root music. Thus, in this new album we will be able to listen to the Castilian romance Andarique (with a slight modification of the lyrics, to give it a contemporary touch), Montaverner’s Granaïna, some very modern albadas, and “un cant d’estil” (with lyrics by Ovidi Montllor). And later, contemporary classics such as “Love is God in a boat” (with lyrics by the poet Enric Casasses, and popularized by Miquel Gil), “El dia que tot rebente” (from La gossa sorda) or “Que tinguem sort” (by Lluís Llach).
