Viral TikTok Video Brings Fleetwood Mac Song Back To Charts 43 Years After Release

TikTok has been at the center of privacy and political controversy for months. But to its users all this does not matter a bit: they keep doing their thing by viewing and sharing short videos, which in many cases go viral with unforeseen consequences.

Dogg Face 208 is the nickname used in this social network by Nathan Apocada, a middle-aged Hispanic American who had already shared numerous videos of him choreographing songs (alone or with his children).

A little over a week ago, he shared another video, in which he appears apparently hovering on a ‘longboard’ while drinking blueberry juice and performing the song ‘Dreams’ by Fleetwood Mac:

But this time, for the mysteries of algorithms and / or human tastes, his video has become an absolute hit on TikTok, capable of harvesting 2.3 million views in its first 7 hours, and whose impact was later also noticed on Twitter and Instagram.

More than 1000% increase in searches on Shazam

A success that has resulted in nothing less than the return of ‘Dreams’ to the top of the charts in the United States, nothing less than 43 years after topping the Billboard Hot 100 in 1977. Given that 60% of Tik Tok users are between 16 and 24 years old, it is safe to say that most of those who have shared the video did not know the group before.

In fact, Searches for the song on Shazam have increased by 1137%, evidence that ‘Dreams’ it has managed to reach a whole new sector of consumers. On YouTube, the video comments from people who claim to have discovered the song with the Apocada video have hundreds of responses and thousands of likes:

According to Nielsen Music / MRC Data, Between September 25 and 27, ‘Dreams’ accumulated 2.9 million streaming broadcasts in the United States and 3,000 digital download sales (figures that exceed 88.7% and 374%, respectively, the previous three days).

And, to this day, it remains at # 28 on the Rolling Stone Top 100 Songs Chart. And, on Spotify, the song opened the month of October at number 18 of its TOP 200 for the United States.

The viral effect of the TikTok video, clearly visible in the chart of the Rolling Stone chart.

The members of Fleetwood Mac, still active, thanked Apocada for his video in a tweet that already has more than half a million ‘likes’, and the band’s own drummer, Mick Fleetwood, He started to create an account on Tik Tok just to participate in the challenge (also viral) to recreate the video from Apodaca (juice bottle included).

The creator of the video himself has not been excluded from the economic repercussions of its success: last Friday already had received $ 10,000 in donations through various mobile payment platforms (such as Venmo and PayPal), of which half will go to buy a new motorhome, and the rest will be given to their mother.

A story that serves as an example that the power of social media to make something fashionable (even what the ‘analog world’ itself considers ‘old-fashioned’) it’s way beyond anecdotal.
