“Rave On, Van Morrison” is a musical show in which 75 of Ireland’s most prominent and emerging singers and musicians have participated to perform Van Morrison’s songs, in a tribute that can be seen on YouTube during the months of August and September.
Van Morrison is recognized as one of the best and most important singers and songwriters in the world, having produced and released more than 40 original albums. Known as “The Lion of Belfast” Morrison’s work routinely references all the places he frequented as a child.
Cyprus Avenue, Orangefield, Hyndford Street and The Hollow in East Belfast, and Coney Island in County Down, have been immortalized in their songs, and there is even a “Van Morrison Trail” in East Belfast that leads to the fans for the most important places of his youth.
Van Morrison’s career has spanned more than five decades. Also nicknamed the “mystic of the East”, referring to East Belfast, the renowned musician, singer and songwriter has been the winner of multiple awards throughout his new career: a knighthood, a Brit, an OBE, an Ivor Novello, 6 Grammy, among other prestigious awards.
Hot Press magazine’s special list of performances will be filled with emotional tributes until Morrison’s birthday on August 31, and will feature performances by Hozier, Sinéad O’Connor, Imelda May, Bob Geldof, Gary Lightbody, Andrea Corr, Glen Hansard, Paul Brady, Damien Dempsey, Una Healy from The Saturdays, Damien Rice, Gavin James, The Academic, Moya Ní Bhraonáin from Clannad, emerging young Dublin rapper Malaki, and many more.
For example, drummer / songwriter David Lyttle has recorded the song “On Hyndford Street”, voiced by acclaimed Irish actor Liam Neeson.
But, the climax of this special tribute will arrive on August 31, and will be the prominent participation of the President of Ireland, Michael D. Higgins, performing ‘Rave On, John Donne’, the song from the album ‘Inarticulate Speech of the Heart’ (1983) from which this celebration derives its name. Joining him on the recording will be Bill Whelan, songwriter of “Riverdance,” who will provide an evocative musical background to this special recited song.
Speaking to Hot Press magazine, President Michael D. Higgins said: “Van Morrison is one of the most prominent composers and performers of the last 60 years and has been a powerful inspiration to successive generations of musicians and artists across the island of Ireland and beyond. It is a great privilege to be part of this extraordinary celebration of Van’s work, on the occasion of his 75th birthday.“.
