Bundesliga News: BVB wins at VfL Wolfsburg – Haaland with comeback

Three days after losing the Champions League, Borussia Dortmund found its way back to success in the Bundesliga with Erling Haaland’s comeback.

After a convincing performance, the DFB Cup winner scored a well-deserved 3-1 (1-1) at VfL Wolfsburg and thus celebrated a successful dress rehearsal for the league summit against Bayern Munich. After being substituted on, Joker Haaland made the decision (81st).

The guests fell behind in the second minute due to Wout Weghorst. But in the 35th minute, the Westphalia managed to equalize with a penalty converted by Emre Can. Donyell Malen took the lead with a low shot from distance (55th) – then Haaland came.

Haaland first on the bench

After his hip flexor muscle injury had healed, Haaland had hardly taken a seat on the substitute bench because his team was already behind. After a precise cross from Ridle Baku, VfL striker Weghorst was successful.

However, coach Marco Rose’s team was not put off by this early deficit. The Lower Saxony came under a lot of pressure in the period that followed and Thomas Meunier (12th) and captain Marco Reus (26th) could have equalized.

Can compensates from the point

Can did this with a sovereign penalty. Maxence Lacroix had previously brought Reus down. Pavao Pervan, as in the Champions League for goalkeeper Koen Casteels (COVID-19) between the posts, had no defense.

At best, the team of coach Florian Kohfeldt came to the point of putting small pinpricks and thus relieving their own defense. The Dortmund goal was no longer in serious danger until half-time, especially since Wolfsburg national player Lukas Nmecha only received a yellow card in the first 45 minutes.

Schulz with a post slam – painting meets

The second half began as the first period ended. BVB pushed for a second goal and had bad luck in the 48th minute when Nico Schulz hit the left post. Seven minutes later, Painting made it better.

Only after this deficit did the wolves become more courageous, but initially nothing more than an optical field superiority emerged. Kohfeldt unequivocally urged his protégés to launch offensive attacks, but it was not really dangerous in the West German penalty area.

Cheers broke out from the BVB fans who had traveled with them when Haaland stepped onto the field in the 73rd minute. The 21-year-old replaced goal scorer Malen. The Scandinavian took his first shot on goal just seconds later, then scored his tenth goal of the season.
