The Italian sprinter Elia Viviani commented: “It is a Giro full of excellent opportunities for sprinters. Perhaps the arrival of the first stage is more favorable for a finisseur or a sprinter who holds up well on the climbs. I would like to be able to fight to win the race again. cyclamen jersey and try to win some stages like the one in Treviso, close to my fans, or the one in Reggio Emilia. Surely there is ground to repeat a Giro like the one in 2018: it would be a dream! “. Here are the seven stages in detail.

Slightly undulating stage across the plain north of the capital to skirt the Slovakian border marked by the Danube, an imposing and constant presence in this area. We touch upon some prestigious locations such as Székesfehérvár and Esztergom with its imposing basilica. Challenging finish once you have left the bank of the Danube. From the center of Visegrád it goes up for about 5 km at 5% up to the royal castle where the first Maglia Rosa will be awarded at the end of an increasingly narrow sprint.

Stage of Lake Balaton, the Hungarian Sea. After a first part in which through slight undulations you approach the lake you reach Nagykanizsa and then Hévíz with its thermal lake and there you go through the Balaton region. The landscape is called the Provence of Hungary and has ups and downs of volcanic origin that characterize the path in that part. Last 50 km along the coast with only the very short roughness of the Tihany Abbey. Almost no bends finish for the first sprint of the compact group.

Classic stage of the Giro in Sicily. From Catania to Messina starting from the east coast to go through Portella Mandrazzi and its gentle slopes, on the northern coast where you reach places such as Villafranca Tirrena, Ganzirri with the enormous Pylon of the Strait of the old power line. A stage for sprinters that will presumably see a sprint of compact group at the end.

Slightly wavy stage once again probably to end with a sprint. After a slightly bumpy first part between Mileto, Vibo Valentia and Pizzo, the race follows the Tyrrhenian coast of Calabria with its short ups and downs. Final that promises to be very fast for the compact group.

Completely flat stage which together with the third is the longest of the Giro. From the Departure to Bologna, the consular road Emilia is practically always straight across the Emilian plain. After Bologna, the stage touches some of the places in the crater of the 2012 earthquake. San Giovanni in Persiceto, Crevalcore, Camposanto, Carpi and Correggio. The route passes along straight and flat roads until reaching Reggio Emilia for the sprint that promises to be in compact ranks.

Relatively short and medium difficulty stage. Follow in the opposite direction what was the summer Sanremo of 2020. From Sanremo you touch Imperia to go up to Colle di Nava and upon reaching Ceva turn towards Cuneo. After several seasons, some symbolic places of the Giro in the area, such as the Sanctuary of Vicoforte and Mondovì, will be touched. Fast finish along the Cuneo plain to reach the final sprint.

Last sprint of compact group of the Giro 2022. First slightly undulating part with the historic Primolano Stairs to access the Piave valley and then cross the Prosecco production area between Valdobbiadene and Refrontolo. Last roughness the short Muro di Ca ‘del Poggio to reach the Treviso plain and tackle the final circuit before the final sprint.
