Qatar, Hamilton’s pole! Beaten Verstappen and Bottas. Ferrari: Sainz is 7th

In qualifying at Losail, the best time of the Mercedes world champion ahead of the Dutch Red Bull and the Finnish. Fourth Gasly who punctures in the final

Mercedes and Lewis Hamilton unleashed in Qatar. The magical moment continues for the Englishman who took pole number 102 of his career in Losail and tomorrow will start ahead of Max Verstappen, second with the Red Bull appearing less fast than the W12. The Dutchman put behind the other Mercedes of Valtteri Bottas, which however can be a factor in tomorrow’s GP, given that Verstappen will not be able to count on the close support of Sergio Perez, who was unexpectedly eliminated in Q2. Fourth time for Pierre Gasly, who punctured in the final and caused a yellow flag on the checkered flag and in fact froze everyone’s times.

The yellow of the double yellow

However, it is not certain that this session does not have an extra-track queue, because Verstappen was still very fast under the double yellow flag, with Gasly proceeding slowly on the finish straight: yellow flags on the left and green light (free track) to the right on the straight, a rather confusing situation which could lead to an investigation into the Dutchman anyway. And we already know that Red Bull has asked for new checks on the rear wing of the Mercedes. In short, in such a tight season finale, surprises are always to be taken into account.

So are Q1 and Q2

Q1 was very tight, with Hamilton’s best time ahead of Verstappen by 95 thousandths, Bottas and Sainz’s Ferrari. Then Perez, Alonso, Tsunoda and Gasly. The two Alfa Romeos of Kimi Raikkonen and Antonio Giovinazzi, the Williams of Nicholas Latifi and the two Haas of Mick Schumacher and Nikita Mazepin did not pass the cut. In Q2 bad news for Ferrari, which lost Leclerc eliminated with the 13th fastest time: the chassis of the Monegasque must be replaced, which was probably due to a passage on the curbs in Q1. The Cavallino was saved with Carlos Sainz, who managed to qualify for Q3 with the tenth time, the last useful. A small miracle if we consider that Sergio Perez with Red Bull (11th) and Daniel Ricciardo with McLaren (14th) also ended up among the excluded. Also eliminated Lance Stroll (12th) and George Russell (15th).
