Leclerc: “Ferrari in line with expectations. But Alpine and AlphaTauri surprised us”

In Qatar, the Cavallino finished in 7th and 8th place with Sainz and the Monegasque. Binotto: “We told the riders not to push to avoid wear problems”

It was not a simple Qatar GP for Ferrari. Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc finished in 7th and 8th place, also preceded by Alpine and Aston Martin. Having preceded McLaren is another step towards third place manufacturers, but having finished very far and beaten by two Alpines and an Aston Martin was not a good sign. “I was quite happy with the set-up of the car, I went well – said Leclerc – I think the gap with Mercedes and Red Bull was more or less what we expected. The bad surprise was seeing the speed of Alpine and Alpha Tauri, now we have to understand ”.

Talk Sainz

Carlos Sainz explains that the Ferraris did not push deliberately, worried about tire wear: “We went conservative – said the Spaniard – thank goodness we scored more points than McLaren. Even with the hard we were afraid of not getting to the end, with the subsequent analysis we saw that we could have pushed harder, but others were more aggressive than us and paid for it with a puncture. Too bad, a bit boring race if you can’t attack. The pace was there, but the fear of usury slowed us down ”.

Binotto speaks

Team principal Mattia Binotto confirmed that the drivers were asked not to push excessively to avoid excessive tire wear: “Unfortunately our car is the same one that suffered a lot at Paul Ricard in terms of wear, for us it is a problem – he said – now the management is better, we asked Charles and Carlos to be careful and to push only with 10 laps to go, when we were sure that there would be no danger for the tread. Others forced and punctured. Too bad for the double pit stop, caused by a radio communication problem. Arabia? From the simulations it is a very fast track, it will not be easy to interpret ”.
