The secret behind Trul’s World Cup success – alone in the world with the new racket

Many have reacted to Truls Möregårdh’s hexagonal racket at the WC.

It is a world news in the ping-pong world that has been kept secret before the championship.

– We have applied for a patent for it and have worked hard to ensure that no images leak out, says Filip Wirström who is one of the brains behind the development.

Truls Möregårdh gets a lot of attention for making it to the World Cup final in singles.

The 19-year-old has also been praised for the spectacular and crowd-pleasing game at the World Cup.

Something that has stuck out in Houston is also the brand new racket that has the shape of a hexagon.

– It is two years since the first idea came. The ping pong industry is very conservative when it comes to development. The frame has been made of wood and much of the development that has been done in recent years has been about a carbon fiber layer. We wanted to see if there were advantages to any new form, says Filip Wirström who is product manager at Stiga in Eskilstuna.

“Crazy in the beginning”

There have previously been angular rackets, mainly in Japan, yet nothing that has looked like this.

It is a design team that has worked with the development to produce a racket that is both visually attractive and increases performance.

They have worked closely with professional players where they have tested different shapes with more rounded edges and different edges.

– It felt crazy in the beginning, because it has been so obvious that a ping pong rack should be around. When we started with the hexagonal shape, we could pretty soon see that in addition to being a neat and cool design, it had product advantages. It is important to find the small, small details that can improve for the players. We have tested in the lab to produce sound at the ball hit and such, the sound is very closely linked to the playing properties, says Filip Wirström.

The edges line the table surface

The hexagonal shape has been named cybershape and has a larger face than the traditional round rackets.

The hitting surface on the upper part where the ball should hit is eleven times larger percent, while the one on the lower part is two percent smaller.

The classic round shape has 2.5 centimeters that aligns with the base of the table, the hexagonal shape has 6.5 centimeters.

– This new racket optimizes the upper part where you should have your ball hit, it will be a larger hit area and a better hit. Instead, the lower part is where you should not really hit the ball any less, so that the weight does not pull away because the weight is very sensitive, says Filip Wirström.

Visually, it is also an advantage to have control of the racket against the table surface.

– When returning and serving, the angle is super important to get the screw you want. It is often said that the first two balls are the most important, with this rack it is easier to see the right angle to the table in a different way is when it is around. There will be straighter lines closer to the table, with a larger hitting surface that gives a greater opportunity to hit the ball and with the screw you want, says Filip Wirström.

A little over a week new

They have also worked very closely with Truls Möregårdh in the process of developing the eye-catching racket.

– Truls Möregårdh is a name of the future, he is the future. His contribution has been a very important part of the development and he was early in the tests with prototypes. It is a world first and we have applied for a patent. Since it is a real novelty in the sport, we have wanted to keep it a secret and worked to ensure that no pictures are leaked. We could not send it out to so many players before launch and many have not had time to test. Truls Möregårdh had to run extra sessions in the hall with his brother late in the evening when everyone else went home to train with the racket, says Filip Wirström.

The hexagonal racket was launched a few weeks ago, at the World Cup Jon Persson has also been seen playing with it.

Before the World Cup, Truls Möregårdh only had time to play with the racket in a league match with Eslöv.

– It is only the last week or the last weeks he has been able to train and play with the completed racket. Now we did not want to disturb him so much in Houston. What he has said apart from the purely technical, is that it was a mental thing to come in with a new racket like this. Ping-pong is a very mental sport and having the coolest racket in the hall and having fun playing is psychologically important, says Filip Wirström.

No restrictions in the rules

What reactions have you received about whether it is allowed according to the rule book?

– We have really received a lot of comments from many who wonder about it. Many ask the question about the rules, but there is nothing in the rules about what a racket may look like or how big it may be. There are no restrictions and can look anytime. If it is too big, there will be problems with the weight and so on.

Truls Möregårdh has previously played with a carbon frame, pretty much everyone in the world tops nowadays because it has more speed and keeps the weight down.

Mattias Falck, who was in the World Cup final in 2019, has previously distinguished himself by playing with the hubs outwards on the forehand side.

At 02.00 on Tuesday night, Truls Möregårdh will play the World Cup final against Chinese world setter Fan Zhendong.
