Vinatzer, a giant challenge: “Qualification objective, with the tips of Moelgg”

Alex on Sunday makes his debut in the Cup in the specialty: “I’ll start with 70 but qualification is possible”

He will have a very high bib. “The last or the penultimate, in any case around 70”. Alex Vinatzer, however, is taking his debut in a giant World Cup very seriously on Sunday in Soelden. And if until yesterday we used to call him “the Val Gardena slalomist”, we will soon have to update the noun. “This summer I worked 50 percent on the slalom and 50 percent on the giant” explains the 22-year-old, who last year was third in Madonna di Campiglio and fourth in the Cortina World Championships, after an amazing first heat. and a second to fight with the holes of a very hot day.

The idea of making Vinatzer also a giant has had it for a while, but the inflammation of the appendix last autumn, close to his debut in the Cup, forced him to revise the programs. “For me it is important to carry on two disciplines. So at the end of last season we worked on the materials, I tested 15-20 pairs of skis until I got to the one I am comfortable with in training. I worked at home with Marco Senoner , Claudio Ravetto also came a couple of days “. Is the giant attractive? “In general I like to ski and have the feeling that I am improving at something. In the giant there is more speed, you need more strength because the loads are higher but you also have more time, more room for corrections, while in slalom you do a little mistake and you’re out. And then change allows you to breathe. “

Vinatzer is naturally ambitious. “In some training sessions I was the fastest among the Azzurri, even in comparison with the other nations I was there. Of course, Soelden is tough, it is perhaps the most difficult place to reach a qualification starting with such a high bib, but Manny (Moelgg , ed) and Ballerin in the past have succeeded. I got some advice, last weekend I tried the track and I got an idea of the lines to ski. I enter the race with the idea that the qualification is absolutely feasible “. The goal for this season, in giant form, will be to enter the top 30. “I need the 450 points for the World Cup Start List – explains Vinatzer -, in order to start with the 31st and at that point it would be easier to make a result to climb the starting list. At the beginning of November with the slalomists we will go to Norway for about ten days (in Storklinten – Boden, ed), we will also work on giant and parallel in view of Lech. My presence in the giants of Val d ‘ Isère and Alta Badia will depend on how my form will be, but I’m pretty confident of being there “.

Vinatzer has clear references in the discipline. “Certainly Marco Odermatt and Alexis Pinturault – he explains -. Put them together and you will get the perfect gigantist. Of the Swiss I like the fact that he has a lot of thrust, he is able to put strength before the pole and exploit it when exiting corners, while the Frenchman is simply solidity and the constancy of the gesture “.

Alex Vinatzer participated in 32 Cup slaloms: debut on 12 November 2017 in Levi; first points in December 2018 in Saalbach, 16th. First top 10 and first podium on January 5, 2020 in Zagreb, third. 2020-21 in swing: 4th in Alta Badia, 3rd in Campiglio, out in Zagreb, Adelboden, Flachau (2) and Schladming, 29th and 13th in Chamonix, 8th in Kranjska and 4th in Lenzerheide.
