The South Korean manufacturer continues testing in the French Alps with the prototype of the hybrid car that will make its debut in the WRC 2022 World Championship starting from the Monte Carlo Rally scheduled for January

The date marked in red on the calendar coincides with the weekend of 23 January 2022, when the WRC World Championship with the Monte Carlo Rally will enter a new era, that of the Rally1 class hybrid cars. Meanwhile, the tests of the manufacturers involved in the world championship continue, with Hyundai testing the new i20 N Wrc on the (snow-covered) roads of the French Alps. We saw a car that appeared in white livery, for the first time without a camouflaged body, which represents a complete development compared to the first prototype tested in the past few weeks.


The Hyundai i20 N is a completely new prototype, as explained by Andrea Adamo, team principal of Hyundai Motorsport, both in terms of the chassis, both of the transmission, and of the developments to the hybrid engine that combines the thermal unit derived from the previous Wrc Plus with the electric one. “Everything is different – said Adamo, also underlining the needs that led to redesigning the lines of the car -, we did a great job”. The prototype tested in the French Alps saw the Belgian Christian Loriaux at the wheel.


While the tests at Hyundai, Toyota and M-Sport Ford proceed at a fast pace, with the cars of the new Rally1 class put to the test on asphalt, dirt and snow, the expectation is growing for a 2022 season that will represent a revolution in the world of rallies. The new technical regulation foresees, in fact, the use of hybrid cars that will have to move in fully electric mode near the service parks and in some portions of the races. The cars will be able to recover energy during braking and deceleration.


Compared to the previous generation of the Wrc Plus class, the new Hyundai i20 N Rally1 highlights novelties in terms of aerodynamics – overall there is a simplification imposed by the technical regulations – and of the exterior: the flaps disappear from the front, while the front wheel arches go to “merge” into the bumper with a pronounced slide. The air intakes on the bonnet, then, have different shapes, with the addition of an outlet above the logo of the South Korean brand. The side view also highlights novelties in particular in the rear, where two “Naca” type air intakes stand out (solutions historically applied to various high-performance supercars, for example the Ferrari F40 introduced them on the front hood), useful for convey the air inside the cooling ducts also to the advantage of optimizing the temperatures in the braking system.


The rear wheel arches of the Hyundai i20 N Rally1 are also new, with an unusual shape in the middle part, a sort of “V” profile, which could facilitate the optimization of the load, considering the aerodynamic simplification that also affects this part of the Rally1 car. At the rear, furthermore, characterized by a maxi wing with two main horizontal profiles and two appendages at the ends, the Hyundai prototype used in the tests sports a decidedly less extreme bumper than the previous Wrc Plus generation (the extractor disappears by regulation), in which two large side air intakes appear. If the main evolution of the Rally1 class cars is represented by the introduction of the electrical component of the powertrain, which has a total weight of less than 100 kg and is housed on the rear axle, precisely this area of ​​the new cars highlights substantial introductions, where it will be essential for manufacturers to optimize the load by combining the flow of hot air exiting the brakes / electrical system and the cooler air flow under the car.
