America’s Cup, Brazil-Peru: all the numbers with the Seleçao

The two teams meet after the 2019 final and this edition’s match in the group stage, both won by Selecao

Brazil against Peru will be the first semifinal of the America’s Cup 2021. The verdeoro are the host national team and now they really see the possibility of winning the competition at home: Brazil are defending champions, having won the 2019 edition with a 3-1 in the final against Peru. Decisive, on that occasion, the goals of Everton, Gabriel Jesus and Richarlison, with the momentary (and very short) Peruvian equalizer with the penalty converted by Paolo Guerrero. Now the challenge comes a hair earlier, close to the final: whoever wins will play the last act on the Italian night between next Saturday and Sunday.

Brazil reached the semifinal by beating Chile in the quarterfinals: 1-0 with the decisive goal of the former Milan Paqueta. The national team of Mr. Bacchi had to defend the advantage with the man less, given the expulsion of Gariel Jesus at the start of the second half. In the group stage, the verdeoro had won against Venezuela, Peru (4-0) and Colombia, while the draw against Ecuador had arrived. Peru instead eliminated Paraguay on penalties: 3-3 in the 90th minute and one sent off on each side. A thriller game, full of pathos. In the group stage there was, as mentioned, the defeat against Brazil, as well as two wins (against Colombia and Venezuela) and a draw with Ecuador.

There are 46 precedents between these two teams, considering all the competitions and also the friendly matches: the balance is favorable to Brazil, which has won on 33 occasions (eight draws and five wins for Peru). Considering only the official matches, the verdeoro have an open streak of five wins: the latest is the aforementioned challenge in the group stage a few weeks ago. There are three consecutive successes of Brazil in the Copa America against Chile: in the last edition, in addition to the final, Selecao had won 5-0 in the group stage. In short, the Brazilians have numbers on their side. And they dream of a double in the America’s Cup.
