Jan-Lennard Struff defied world number two Daniil Medvedev in Wimbledon, but missed a surprise. The 31-year-old Warsteiner lost to the Australian Open finalists from Russia 4: 6, 1: 6, 6: 4, 6: 7 (3: 7). Previously, veteran Philipp Kohlschreiber had to admit defeat to the clearly favored Canadian Denis Shapovalov after a five-set fight on his 16th Wimbledon participation.
Struff had recently defeated Medvedev in two sets at the ATP tournament in Halle / Westphalia. Nevertheless, he would have “wished for a different lot”, as he said in advance at Sky: “At first I couldn’t believe it and thought: It can’t be true.” Right before the start in Wimbledon, Medvedev had won his first lawn title on Mallorca.
The 37-year-old Kohlschreiber played against Shapovalov, who was seeded in tenth place, at eye level, but lost 4: 6, 6: 4, 3: 6, 7: 5, 4: 6. Because of the rain, the game originally scheduled for Monday had been postponed to Tuesday. Even then, the typically British weather caused an interruption of around four hours.
On the other hand, Oscar Otte provided a German highlight on his debut in the Wimbledon main draw. His opening match against the French Arthur Rinderknech had been canceled on Monday evening because of the falling darkness, because of rain he had to be patient until late on Tuesday evening. Otte stayed strong and won 4: 6, 6: 3, 6: 2, 6: 7 (5), 13:12 (2).
