Sneaky assassination attempt on a journalist in Holland!
According to the police, the prominent Dutch crime reporter Peter R. de Vries was seriously injured in an attack in the middle of Amsterdam. According to Dutch reporters, he was shot several times. De Vries was shot in the head in a hospital and is in mortal danger. Nothing has yet been announced about the background to the crime. Two suspects were arrested on a motorway, one in Amsterdam, reports the Dutch “AD”.
► At around 7.30 p.m., according to media reports, an unknown person shot 64-year-old de Vries at Leidseplein in the center of Amsterdam when the journalist left the RTL Boulevard TV studio. De Vries had recently taken part in a live broadcast in which he appears regularly. Witnesses recognized the victim, and videos of the crime scene were also distributed on social media.
A video from a surveillance camera is circulating on the Internet, which is supposed to show Peter R. de Vries walking along a street after the broadcast. He is wearing a light gray suit and appears to be looking at his phone. A few seconds later, a man with a motorcycle helmet walks behind. Policemen in a car patrol the normal way, turn right. A few seconds later gunshots can be heard.
Another video shows a man, also in a light gray suit, lying lifeless on the floor. Blood is protruding from under his head. Allegedly it should be de Vries. A woman jerks him, tries to speak to him.
→ In a press conference late in the evening, Mayor Femke Halsema said: “At this moment we only know that Peter R. de Vries is fighting for his life. He’s a national hero. It was a cowardly and brutal crime. “
Prime Minister Mark Rutte: “That was an attack on free journalism. An attack on a courageous journalist. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family. The most important thing now is that he survives. “
Justice Minister Grapperhaus and Prime Minister Rutte reacted very emotionally to the attack. Grapperhaus spoke of a black day and an attack on freedom.
A little later, the Dutch royal family reacted to the attack via Facebook and Twitter.
“The news that the journalist Peter R. de Vries was gunned down shook us deeply. He and everyone close to him are in our thoughts, ”the post says.
And further: “Journalists should be able to carry out their important work unhindered and freely. We feel connected to everyone who campaigns for the free press in our constitutional state. “
De Vries is the leading crime reporter in the Netherlands and regularly appears as a spokesperson for victims or witnesses at trials. He is currently the Crown Witness confidante in a major organized crime trial. In connection with the trial, the attorney for the key witness had already been shot in 2019.
